[split] Gender Discussion
Since the trans discussion has been reduced to a meme or punchlines on places like Cunningham’s show, below is a link to an article about the evolving knowledge of genetics and sex determination. The idea that one can look at genitalia and know someone’s sex is thoroughly outdated:

It's yet another religion for you, isn't it? My lord you have a lot of them.

Whatevs. Dress how ya want. Identify with being who and what you want to be. Get your crank removed if it floats your boat. Don't really care one way or the other. Still either a X or Y.

It's a mental condition. And I mean the progressives who are all hot and bothered by this now.

Well, it’s actually not just X or Y.

The science of genetics has quickly advanced - even when you haven’t.

Since you’ve insisted on being simplistic, start off by Googling Swyer Syndrome, where a person born with female organs has XY chromosomes. Yep, that’s right - male chromosomes, female genitalia. Its an actual thing.

Science is now finding that genetic abnormalities and differences can sometimes override the XX-XY stuff you were taught in high school science.

RE: Bob Huggins, Days Numbered at WVU?
Studies of DSDs have shown that sex is no simple dichotomy. But things become even more complex when scientists zoom in to look at individual cells. The common assumption that every cell contains the same set of genes is untrue. Some people have mosaicism: they develop from a single fertilized egg but become a patchwork of cells with different genetic make-ups. This can happen when sex chromosomes are doled out unevenly between dividing cells during early embryonic development. For example, an embryo that starts off as XY can lose a Y chromosome from a subset of its cells. If most cells end up as XY, the result is a physically typical male, but if most cells are X, the result is a female with a condition called Turner's syndrome, which tends to result in restricted height and underdeveloped ovaries. This kind of mosaicism is rare, affecting about 1 in 15,000 people.
The effects of sex-chromosome mosaicism range from the prosaic to the extraordinary. A few cases have been documented in which a mosaic XXY embryo became a mix of two cell types—some with two X chromosomes and some with two Xs and a Y—and then split early in development. This results in 'identical' twins of different sexes.
There is a second way in which a person can end up with cells of different chromosomal sexes. James's patient was a chimaera: a person who develops from a mixture of two fertilized eggs, usually owing to a merger between embryonic twins in the womb. This kind of chimaerism resulting in a DSD is extremely rare, representing about 1% of all DSD cases.

I do find some of your interesting but it is probably best for the off topic thread or politics thread. I get how it's tangentially related to the topic at hand.

In light of mass media commentary by Cunningham and opinions on it formed by misinformation by the likes of rath, what I posted about the topic is needed and not tangential. So from your response, I understand that jokes about the topic are ok for the main board, but the actual science is not. In my opinion, the science part of the discussion is needed the most.

In the minds of many (most) on here, trans is some concocted mental state. It’s a punchline.

Now let’s get back to talking about how funny Huggins is…

Lol…I think that’s in the next episode.

Yes. Once you move beyond the Huggins portion of the conversation (even the bad taste jokes) it's probably best to take it off the UC Sports Board.

RE: [split] Gender Discussion
Let me reframe it. If Huggin’s had used Down’s syndrome as part of his humor, I’m pretty sure most - if not all - posters would be offended. And what is Down’s Syndrome? It an extra chromosome that’s not supposed to be there.

Chromosomal and genetic abnormalities account for differences in sex development (DSD). Some of them involve an extra chromosome. Some of them involve a mixture of XY and XX chromosomes within the same individual. Some involve a person with female genitalia and male chromosomes. There are living human beings out there whose makeup isn’t just one or the other. It’s a real thing.

I don’t personally know any trans people, and quite frankly didn’t understand much about it. But I see one working at the gas station around the corner, at the fast food place down the street. They seem to occupy the service industries for sure. I make an extra effort to be sociable with them.

Trans people are already targets. Seems that making fun of one’s genetic disorder is distasteful, ignorant, and not particularly Christian.

But, yeah, that Huggins is a drunken hoot.
