What gives us better conferences? Wins or winning percentage?
Ok, markets and titles and budgets and history are fine and all.

But if we really want to see the elite teams play each other (and roughly balanced conferences) then we need a new metric.

So let's reformat all conferences (in groups of, say, 12*) based on all-time wins. What does that give us? How about winning percentage? Is that better?

Which would you prefer for the whole sport? Which would you prefer for your team?

Looks like our new SEC (by total wins) would be:

Michigan
Ohio State
Alabama
Notre Dame
Texas
Oklahoma
Penn State
Nebraska
Georgia
Tennessee
USC
LSU

By winning % it'd be:

Ohio State
Alabama
Michigan
Notre Dame
Boise State
Oklahoma
Texas
USC
Penn St
Nebraska
Tennessee
Florida State

I guess you'd do pods or something? Top one might sort to divisions if you squint a little.

*"One true champion" style round robin groups of 9 would be even better

I think for my school by raw wins, it'd be:

Tech
Purdue
Fresno State
Arizona State
NC State
South Carolina
Oklahoma State
Illinois
Baylor
Marshall
Arizona
UCLA

Not crazy about the travel in this one. We'd have among the best recruiting areas, but by far the lowest budget (but that'd be true with almost any 12 schools in FBS for us).

By percentage:

Bowling Green
Tech
Syracuse
UCF
NC
Toledo
Air Force
Arizona
WMU
Texas Tech
Navy
Tulsa

Travel still bad, but we'd probably win more in this league. TV deal probably isn't as good.

Winning is only a small part of the equation. Market Size and Viewership is the leading factor in realignment.

Boise State can win, with marquee victories over P5, and have a high winning percentage. They will still be left behind time and time again.

Of course.

File this with the thought experiments, what do you want to happen, here's my dream conference type threads.

I just think it's a different interesting way to think about it.

You guys took Boise's spot. If realignment had heated up during their peak then they would have gotten in. Wins matter a lot, otherwise Alabama would be Mississippi St.

Those two schools share a conference (and a conference media deal).

Wins matter a little.

Okay, as a hypothetical I think I'd prefer Avg Rank

Wins and Win Percentage still need context. The voters really but quality over quantity.

http://www.winsipedia.com/ranking

20-team
Alabama
USC
Oklahoma
Ohio State
Notre Dame
Texas
Michigan
Nebraska
Georgia
LSU
Tennessee
Penn State
Clemson
Florida
Florida State
Texas A&M
Auburn
Miami
Washington
Wisconsin

Ideally, there would be promotion and relegation model associated with this system.

20-team

20 is 8-11 teams too many.

But if you did groups of 12, I'd be ok with where we'd land (err, with whom we'd land, I guess).
