George Washington Revolutionaries
I didn't see anything wrong w Colonials, but this sounds good, still fits. I wish Long Beach St. would go back to the 49ers or just be the Dirtbags. The Beach? lame

They've got a bunch of 3rd world students who think "colony" and "colonists" and "colonials" are 4 letter words.

This is a straight-up upgrade. Colonials was a fairly lame name, but my issue with it was that Washington fought a war to STOP being a colonial.

GW Revolutionaries is an improvement. I don't think anyone at GW is going to miss the old name.

No. Way too many syllables. Does anyone else have a 6 syllable nickname?
Banana slugs is 2 words and only 4 syllables!

I like it keeps the theme, but that then begs the question so then why change it? Revolutionaries is too long too.

I’d bet they’ll often shorten it to “Revs” which sort of works. Beyond that, I hate the PC crap.

It will probably be shortened to “Revs” or something to that effect colloquially.

I’ll give credit that at least the name itself isn’t a bland generic one that could be used anywhere. Better than the crosstown Commanders (who may not even be able to use their name because the USPTO just blocked their trademark registration today).

It's being changed for woke reasons. (Not going to argue about it, you all know what I mean. You can like that or not like that, I'm not going to argue it on this board.)

But it's a good change even if you don't like changing for woke reasons. GW Colonials was always kind of dumb. GW was born a colonial, but he fought a whole entire war for us to not be colonials.

As for the syllables:
1. GW isn't a big sports schools, so I wouldnt' worry too much about it. It's not like we had good chants using the name "Colonials" anyway. Gee Dub sometimes. Let's Go Colonials? That is not a thing that we said.
2. The new name has a few options. "Re-vo lu-tion Clap clap, clap clap clap" springs to mind.

Switch it back to colonials. I still don’t get the snowflake outrage against the old mascot. George Washington was the general of the COLONIAL army—the troops were called COLONIALS. It has nothing to do with colonialism.

"Washington Football Team" was so generic it was unique. I liked it better than "Commanders".

Should have gone with the Hogs. A throwback to their glory days and you can have a cool logo of an angry looking pig. Half the population isn’t going to like who is in command in DC at any given time.

100%.

This is one of the rare times a team upgraded in a name change. George Washington Revolutionaries is straight-up awesome.

This. Almost everytime, it ends up Eagles, [fill in the blank] Hawks, Sharks, or something bland. For once, we have a name change that will be a hit.

Not Sharks...LIU is the only D-I, Nova Southeastern in D-II and USC-Beaumont (Sand sharks) in D-II

I just think being able to juxtapose “WFT” with “WTF” so easily was so appropriate for that franchise.

It’s better than some options.

The Mount Vernon Mangfrang?
The Wooden Teethers?
Cherry Tree Choppers?
Can’t Tell A Liars?
Wig Wearing Big Schnozes?

But I’m already anticipating people calling them the Revolution Fairies… Lol.

As bad as Washington Football Team was, I thought it could have been retained for the time when American football is replaced (due to CTE issues) by what the rest of the world calls football. ETA: Fresno beat me to it.
