So you have season tickets but didn't go?

I traveled a bunch this season so missed at least four for that. Then it's tough going to a 7pm game after being at the office for 12 hours.

RE: Memphis BB Season Tickets down 25% last season.
Watching college hoops this past season, there were many schools, P5 ones, where the arenas were surprisingly empty. Arenas that used to be packed. Where have all those fans gone? We’re dealing with the same issue many schools are. We always joked about the ‘downstairs blue hairs’ but honestly they float the program. The Covid mayhem and rules scared a good many away, and their donations. Plus there’s way too many games now that have pretty much close to zero interest and value. Penny is doing his best to improve the schedule. He’s doing a good job. But until then if you have tickets to the Alabama State or Arkansas Pine Bluff games and try to give them away the person you ask will probably say ‘no thanks, I’m having a hemorrhoidectomy’. They’ll be glad they are.

The demand is down. Couldn’t give away my mid court lower level tickets this year. Not sure if it’s the economy, poor schedule or fear of crime downtown. I know the only times I did find someone to take the tickets it was only if the parking garage pass was included. Nobody wanted to go without that.

All of it. It’s just a hassle to drive 30 min each way down there, pay to park, deal with the homeless, pay $10+ for a beer to watch us play Rooster Poot U or these AAC teams that are left. We’ve have some good atmosphere games the last few seasons - Bama, Ole Miss, Houston a couple of times, but for the most part, the crowds and games are just meh. So much easier to sit at home, drink 6 beers for what 1 costs at FEF, and change channels to multiple games. Then when the game is over, it’s not 20 min to walk back to the car and get out of downtown for the 20 min drive home.

In a vacuum it's worse than it seems. Attendance is down overall, and we are still comfortably in the top 25. I am sure that we are in the top 25 as far as season ticket prices go, also.

Maybe it takes too much effort. We’re living in a post-pandemic society with people who want to work from home in their pajamas, have remote meetings, have their groceries delivered, their meals delivered, their McDonald’s delivered, shop online and have their stuff delivered, etc. Having their games delivered to their home theater makes too much sense. No effort required.

I’m not insinuating this is only reason, but I do think it has had an effect.

^^THIS^^ plus the WUSSIFICATION of America and sports.

Heck even the PGA for the most part is getting WUSSIFIED . They are moving to tournaments with NO CUTS--don't want to hurt the little darlings feelings with the embarrassment of missing the cut. The announcer at the MAJOR PGA TRNY last week said it looks like the tour wants to move to mostly all NO CUT EVENTS --SMH

No shift in baseball---pitch clock--LARGER BASES--extra innings man automatically on 2nd.

College and pro football new rules to speed up the game --and rules to enhance more scoring

If somebody doesn't have the time to go to a sporting event THEN DON'T GO

If someone doesn't have the time to watch a game on TV--then DON'T WATCH

Sports and SPORTS TRADITIONS ARE BEING DESTROYED--RECORDS ARE BEING OBLITERATED

Sports need to get back to their roots---get back RULES AND ALL --what made America fall in love with them in the first place.

WE don't even sell out for Ole Miss.

People just don't attend things like we used to.

We could be in the Big XII and it wouldn't matter much more. And we still are one of the best college basketball programs in attendance.

Of course the mouthbreathers in here are blaming some football helmet stickers.

That’s the primary reason that we don’t buy season tickets… Going to every game is a huge commitment. Having young kids, we’d have to give up a lot of things to be able to make every game.

I know it's hard for me to get as excited about college sports since these changes have kicked in.

Also with all the media behind paywalls, its tough for out of towners like me to follow all these changes.

CA subscriptions are probably down more than 25%

Last 3 games the fans, particularly the students showed up. Before that not so much. College basketball has become a one month sport. A lot plays into it.

There are a LOT more entertainment alternatives available today than there were just a few years ago.

Streaming services and other Internet-based alternatives are becoming more robust all the time.

The caliber & reputation of our opponents does affect attendance at both FB & MBB home games. Even if they don't provide for sellouts we do generally have better attendance for games against better recognized schools. There are occasional exceptions for opening games, especially in seasons where there is great expectation for our team. With the right home schedule (including high level OOC games) with a competitive team expected to actually contend for the conference title, we could annually approach a 40K attendance avg. We can't do that with a mediocre team predicted to to finish 3rd or lower in the AAC (which has become reality) & playing a weak FB schedule with the likes of Bethune-Cookman, N. AL, LA-Monroe, etc & UNC-Char & NTX in-conference. Avg attendance last season was about 25K. And BTW, Kroger tickets don't make the school any money even if they do provide some increase in attendance.

It will continue to decline as long as we are mediocre every year. Spin it however you want, blame whatever outside influence or third party you want but the reality is Penny’s teams have struggled against with middle of the road and bad teams. We have missed several NCAA tournaments and not been past the 2nd round. It is really that simple IMO. Mediocre teams, mediocre records results in mediocre fan engagement and ticket sales… Win at a high level and produce an exciting product and fans will show up.

This is not unique to Memphis though. Before Mussleman at Arkansas they were literally giving tickets away at the entrance and still had terrible turnouts. A few deep tournament runs and now they are back to being packed for every game.
