I know it's hard for me to get as excited about college sports since these changes have kicked in.

Also with all the media behind paywalls, its tough for out of towners like me to follow all these changes.

No doubt ......

It’s just a different time. I heard someone on the radio trailing about firing coaches because of attendance. That we shouldn’t have fired Tubby and now we are saying the same thing about Penny. First off Tubby was not just fired for attendance. It was obvious to everyone that he had no desire to even recruit or thought that he could do better than 5th place. Penny on the other hand is facing way more obstacles now with money. Economy stinks. Prices are too high for a lot of fans to go. Crime is rampant. And then you throw the NIL in there and it’s one big mess. Memphis fans will still come for what they think is an “event” and that’s it. What even will we have next season? Virginia and FAU? It’s a big problem but there’s not one particular thing that causing it

For me it's lack of star power, lack of a quality top 25 team (last year's team was good IMO but to casual fans they want to see a # next to their team), lack of marquee home games, and probably a little Covid burnout still, as well.

Lots of discussion about why attendance is down, but the Grizzlies seem to be drawing fine.

It’s a big part of it with the younger fans for sure. When I say younger I say 18-35. But with the latest with Ja that might soon fade.

I live in a no excuse city when it comes to hockey. We average over 21,000 attendance per game which is the highest in hockey every year, and at one point went something like 16 years selling out every single game. We have 41 regular season home games per year, plus 5 exhibition games. The average ticket price is $90 USD, and season ticket holders have to buy tickets to the exhibition games at the full price. At one point there was a 20 year wait list for season tickets.

When we played a road playoff game in 2010, 21,000 tickets to our HOME arena were sold in an hour to watch the game on a giant screen.

South Carolina mostly sucks but still averages 80,000 per game when they go 4-8. Nashville...frigging NASHVILLE is the 3rd most expensive place to watch a game in the entire NHL and average over 17,000 per game.

Our fans have so many excuses it is ridiculous. Games aren't played on the same street they live on, and they have to drive 30 minutes or more to games, games aren't on campus, are downtown, are in the Pinch neighborhood with nothing else to do, traffic leaving the stadium/arena, games against not great opponents, no stars on the team, bad weather, church, high school football, no parking, ticket prices, the cost of concessions, the cost of food and drinks on Beale, the coach isn't good, the coach isn't nice, the conference sucks, crappy music on the PA system, don't like the Ashley Furniture commercials, too many ads during timeouts, PA system is too loud, don't like PA announcer, helmet stickers, heat, cold, rain, not wanting to spend the day/night at a game when the weather is perfect, youth soccer, the bathrooms, the scoreboard showing a couple singing Rocky Top, the sirens, poor sound quality, no chairbacks, portable chairbacks going up $5 per game in price, Tiger Lane prices going up $200, The Grizzlies, the circus, flat screen tv's...

I've never seen anything like it.

You fix so many of those problems with what they want to do with the renovation. You'll have indoor areas to get out of the heat or rain. There'll be AC. TVs. Better food options. Lucas Oil has something like what they want to build. It's an indoor concourse completely closed off from the elements. Not to mention hopefully the lower suites will be enclosed. You can put UT and Ole Miss on the tv in there.

The renderings look terrific, and lopping off at least 10,000 seats will be a huge help. I have a feeling that capacity will end up being less than 50,000, which would be even better. The experience in the suites will go from no good to amazing. It will completely change the gameday experience. Having said that, even though I've only been to one game, FEF is really good even without doing any renos. There should be no excuse for Tiger basketball fans.

For me it's lack of star power, lack of a quality top 25 team (last year's team was good IMO but to casual fans they want to see a # next to their team), lack of marquee home games, and probably a little Covid burnout still, as well.

RE: Memphis BB Season Tickets down 25% last season.
Penny is not as good as Cal when it comes to coaching. The team we put out on the court aren't as good as the teams Cal put out. When Cal was here, we embraced D-Rose, CDR, Barton, Kemp, etc. I think it's tough to embrace the players a lot knowing they're going to be here for 6 months. In Penny's case, that'll be Duren/Achiuwa, and even for the case of Kendrick Davis. It's tough to embrace a team knowing there will likely be a new team next year because players are transferring too much whether if they are transferring on their own, or if Penny is giving them the door.
It doesn't help that Ja/Jaren are playing for the Grizzlies either. And they have market themselves to the point where the kids are going to love and embrace them. And they're likely to not go anywhere, anytime soon.
I don't think the product on the court is now worth driving 30 minutes to downtown, knowing people can watch the game on their flat screen TV's. This is where the conference is going to hurt the university from a basketball standpoint, because fans aren't willing to see to drive to see them beat ECU/Rice, but are willing to drive to see them lose to Kansas/Baylor.

People value time more than anything nowadays, and I don't blame them.

Spin it however you want, blame whatever outside influence or third party you want but the reality is Penny’s teams have struggled against with middle of the road and bad teams. We have missed several NCAA tournaments and not been past the 2nd round. It is really that simple IMO. Mediocre teams, mediocre records results in mediocre fan engagement and ticket sales… Win at a high level and produce an exciting product and fans will show up.

This is not unique to Memphis though. Before Mussleman at Arkansas they were literally giving tickets away at the entrance and still had terrible turnouts. A few deep tournament runs and now they are back to being packed for every game.

Last S16 was 2009 when you know who was still the coach.
