Either way, I want to see the schedule lean towards playing as many teams equally as possible, not geared to scheduling division teams more. I used to hate a long time ago when the schedule was set up you only played the teams from the other conference once if that.
Even for the conference with one "western" division, could only make a difference for four games, only two of which would be away. The assumption would be you okay the other conference twice (32 games), everyone in in your conference 3 times (45 games) and then your division a fourth time (3 games) for a total of 80 games. That said, a NFL-style alignment will increase travel for everyone; teams in the Northwest, for example will trade at least 4 away games in the Pacific Time Zone for games further east.
Although it would not be symmetric, I actually think a 6-5-5 lineup in each conference might work better, especially since the season is 82 games:
West 1 - VAN, SEA, CGY, EDM, CO
Central 1 - DAL, NSH, CAR, FL, TB
East 1 - NYI, NYR, NJ, PHI, WAS, BOS
West 2 - LA, ANA, VEG, SJ, AZ
Central 2 - CLB, CHI, STL, MN, WPG
East 2 - TOR, OTT, MTL, BUF, DET, PIT
The 4-3-2 format would still apply for scheduling; the east division teams get exactly 82 games in their format, while the West and Central Divisions get 81 games and therefore play an extra non-division game. Teams in the West Division of each conference would still get get 54 out of 82 games in the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones (41 at home, 13 away). Teams in the East and Central Divisions get 69 out of 82 games in the Eastern and Central Time Zones.
