Did we improve our Win_Loss record relative to last season?

Yes, 21-35 vs 17-39, but also an insane number of games we lost in extra innings, by one run, blown save, etc.

I'm willing to bet we lost at least 12 games-- and probably closer to 15-20 games-- when we had a 7th inning or later lead.

I'll take that bet...According to the game notes for the FIU series (which are readily available by the way at Riceowls.com) and adding in the results of the FIU series, we are:

17-8 when leading after 6
16-5 when leading after 7 and
17-3 when leading after 8.

Far from the loss of at least 15-20 games when leading after 7 innings or later.

We were also 5-11 in one run games and 0-5 in extra innings. I think those are what makes the season seem particularly painful. Go 9-7 in one run games and we're at 25-31. Still not great, but getting us closer to 0.500

Sorry, but I don't believe the game notes stats. In just the last 3 weeks we lost 7 games in which we had the lead after 7 innings. The DBU series alone we were leading in all three games after 7 (2 with leads into the 9th), and blew all 3. Then there's the "meaningless" McNeese St. game in which we had a 2 or 3-run lead heading into the 9th. Then there's opening day against ULaLa, when Raj blew that late lead. I could go on and on. Did we win a single game all season when we were tied going into the 8th or 9th inning?

Second game against FIU, just a few days ago.

Also, the third game against UAB.

More losses than wins this season when tied in the 8th or 9th, though, which I guess is your point. I counted six losses, without checking every game.

There's a website where you can look all this stuff up, including box scores, by the way. It's called http://www.riceowls.com

I'll agree with Walt that these figures don't look right.

For one thing Rice won UAB Game 3 in the 10th inning, so the 0-5 isn't right.

For one thing Rice won UAB Game 3 in the 10th inning, so the 0-5 isn't right.

I did a quick scan. The referenced game notes were prepared prior to the FIU series, so there had been 53 games (19 wins) completed at that time. If I add up the total games for all of the score conditions for the 7th inning, they add to 50 games (18 wins), and when I do the same for the 8th inning, they add to 48 games (17 wins).

In my defense, the records I got came from scrolling through the schedule/results in riceowls.com. If you go look, they don't have the game 3 UAB win notated as extra.innings. I think my general point still stands. We're not very good (combo of luck and bad bullpen) in close games.

It can happen-- in the AAC tourney pool play, #8 seeded South Florida knocked off #1 seeded ECU. Even if they end up winning the conference tourney, at this point they've almost certainly lost any chance of hosting as their RPI has fallen to #28.

To-wit, the Aggies beat Tennessee today 3-0 in the SEC tournament after Tennessee swept A$M all three games earlier this year.

True, but the Aggies have been red hot of late and they're going to the regionals regardless. Upset, yes, but not that big of one.

I didn’t say it was a big upset, Walt. See you at the game tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I can't make it this week as I just had oral surgery and can't air travel until Friday at the earliest, and I'm on a soft food diet for a couple weeks. However, I'll be watching via video feed.

BTW, #7 seed Tulane upset #2 seed UH in the AAC tourney, so both the #1 and #2 seeds have to play through the losers bracket. Both are already locks for at large bids, however. I suspect both DBU and UTSA are in a similar situation in CUSA.

Houston is not going to get an at-large bid. They have a RPI <100.

Well, they do have 2 wins over Rice. ?

For reference, as of midday 5/24, UH’s RPI is 102 and Rice’s RPI is 161.

Managed to purchase a single-game ticket at one of the windows in Tudor (couldn't get the QR version to work, and online sales were only for the entire series).
I'll be there, testing all of the GA seats.
