2023 CUSA Track & Field Championships
Rice Women set a program record for most points in a conference meet, and it was CUSA’s third highest total ever.
Rice scored points (top 8) in all 21 events.

Gotta credit the AAC 6. Football, basketball, T & F, all very good.

Damn. WKU dead last. Women next to last. When I was in school we had some good track teams. Nationally ranked cross country teams. No backing by the administration. Western is more like a track club now.

MT the same. Dean Hayes passed away in Jan. '22 and the track team went downhill quickly. I think Dean had coached at MT since 1963 -- he was the longterm coach we wanted to stay.

RE: 2023 CUSA Track & Field Championships
New Mexico State is one of the schools with only a women’s program right now. I don’t know CUSA teams well enough to know how we will do versus CUSA teams. We were WAC champions this year, so I’d imagine we will at least be competitive.
With just a glance, it appears the stronger programs are departing for the men and women both. Should be a fairly wide open field going forward.
Liberty M&W both won the Asun this year and Kennessaw was second in both divisions. That duo will no doubt be the favorites next year.

To be fair, MTSU is historically a very good T&F program. Dean Hayes was a legend and I doubt MTSU will be down for very long. He passed unexpectedly so we all knew it would be a down year with the sudden change. If you would like to read about him:

Good programs usually bounce back quickly. I was just looking at the top 3 and top 4 finishers in conference this year all being departing schools, more than the quality over time. It’s a new group of schools for me so I’m still learning about them.

That’s true but having a legendary coach pass away 2 months before the season starts is a tall task to ask for anyone to right the ship. I’m a little worried but I’ll give Keith another season before I really cast judgement.

RE: 2023 CUSA Track & Field Championships
Overall, Hayes has guided the programs to 29 OVC titles, 19 Sun Belt championships, and 21 NCAA Top 25 finishes. Fifty-two of his student-athletes have earned a total of 125 All-America honors, five have become national champions six times and a number of them have gone on to compete internationally in the Olympic Games, World University Games, World Championships, Goodwill Games, Pan-American Games and African Championships.
In Conference USA, Hayes claimed 11 titles, six with the women and five with the men's team. Most recently, sweeping the 2021 men's and women's cross country championships.
The Naperville, Ill., native also served as an assistant at several international events. Aside from the first Olympic Sports Festival, Hayes worked as an assistant at the World University Games in Bucharest, Romania (1981); the World Championships in Helsinki (1983) and was a Coach for the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea (1988). He also acted as a referee at the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta (1996).

We don’t sponsor men’s track but do have men’s cross country.
