If the NIL rules had been in place since 1970....
Michael "The Burner" Turner would have jumped ship for a high P5 school. Who else would have left.

Probably all of our standouts, such as Garrett Wolfe and maybe Jordan Lynch. Thank God NIL wasn’t around then. With NIL and the transfer portal, I don’t think we’ll return to the glory days of NIU football, except for maybe an isolated year here and there.

Everyone. Even the kids who sucked. Go up or go down. Get what you want, when you want. Like Burger King.

I mean…brown didn’t. I think you are overstating this thing
We didn’t lose a whole lot. We gained rocky. We gained rut…trying to gain a few more backers.
Hell the RB room now is as strong as it probably has ever been. The top 2 (3 if you count the new kid from South Carolina who was a wake guy before Juco.)
Would NIU have ever had such a strong RB room without the new transfer and NIL rules? We NIU have ever landed a shad dabney type of player without the rule allowing for kids to transfer once without penalty.

NIU doesn't have the 2021 MAC Championship without the portal. Please remember that. I get that the transfer's out cut deeper than the excitement of the transfer's in, but our best 3 players - Lombardi, Brown and Rudolph are still here. And even if we do lose a great player, most guys don't have 3 great seasons in a career. Often it's just 2 seasons. Smith, Lynch, Harnish, Golladay, Turner.....So more often than not you're still getting that first great season before they transfer and only losing their last year.

RE: If the NIL rules had been in place since 1970....
Why is the assumption they leave?
They still could have gotten NIL deals not directly associated with a school. And NIL promising a deal to go to a school is technically against the rules as is attending a specific school to get a deal, or was the way this crap goes. Because I think CA set something up where CA kids get one to attend CA schools.
And who knows, perhaps someone steps forward many moons ago and donors turn their money to NIL. But then again, donating to both I believe is also supposed to be against the rules. or again, was.
This stuff never exists without internet in the form it is, in particular making money and retail on social media. You likely would have had the school stipend 1st[/u] years ago, which most schools didn't want and were happy never cam about.

The issue isn't and wasn't the portal itself, at least to most. 1st it was free transfers that mounted during covid and stayed and followed by NIL basically paying someone to attend a school.

His NIL. gift , or one of, was use of his Chevy blazer with Snake 33 plates at UI. It was common knowledge. I actually saw it once on Dan Ryan.

I don't think the NIL money is the biggest thing that gets a player to enter the portal. In certain situations, yes, Im sure it's a factor. But I think most guys who go in the portal would do it whether there's a NIL deal or not. Was Rayner was lured by money? Who knows, but really you don't need a bunch of money to choose Lexington over Dekalb.

Snake 33 is Ken Norman not Battle. Although I believe he drove either a Blazer or IROC-Z at U of I,among other things he got under Lou Henson

Yup, my bad.
Yeah, they had them set up with a "lease" with a friend of the program too.
I wrote a paper at NIU about SMU death penalty. Was comical some of the stuff. No payment leases may have been one. Shoes I remember to plane tickets home for a parent or grandparent funeral. Today I guess the airline would just sponsor him.

A relative of mine was working with Jamie Brandon as his tutor one Summer to get him admitted to Illinois. I heard all kind of stores about that program around that time. They set all the players up with jobs as toll collectors during the Summer as well. That didn't go to well.....
