Is there already a term used to describe a tournament host that is not otherwise participating?
Perhaps this perpetually cheery group can come up with something...

Same problems as at the start of the season, only exacerbated a bit by injuries at this point. Mental block on clutch hitting, holes in the batting lineup, and not enough bullpen depth. All three came into play in the extra innings.

Through the 1st 22 games, the Owls were 11-11. Fans were hopeful the Owls could continue to show improvement, finish at or above .500, and make the CUSA tournament.

In their last 22 games the Owls are 6-16. The Owls are now 10 games under .500 with only a long shot of a chance at making the Conference tournament. Play has not improved, IMO.

I'd call that spiraling out of control.

I don't see any new problems that weren't evident at the start of the season. Call it what you will. *Shrug*

Regarding the conference tournament, is taking 2 of 3 from UTSA an absolute must to make the tournament at this point. Just curious as to the mathematical odds of squeaking in to the tournament.

No-we could probably get away with one win this weekend. We have a two game lead (and the tie breaker) for the 8 seed currently.

RE: Rice vs UH (Game 2 of Silver Glove)
Here's the way I look at it:

1. All teams have 9 C-USA games remaining

2. We have a 2 game lead on UAB in the battle for 8th place (we are 7-14 and they are 5-16). Since we hold the tiebreaker against UAB we need a combination of 7 Rice wins and/or UAB losses to qualify ahead of UAB.

3. We have a 3 game lead on FIU (they are 4-17). We need any combination of 6 Rice wins/FIU losses to qualify ahead of FIU. Since we play them the last series at home, if we sweep FIU, we qualify ahead of them. If we win 2 of 3, then we only need a combination of 2 Rice wins/FIU losses to qualify ahead of FIU.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually, if we qualify in 8th place and DBU qualifies first, we would open with them and have Parker smith on the mound...I like our chances in that situation.

Pretty good summary, but without the tiebreaker (yet) our magic number with FIU is also 7. That number is key to tracking whether we can clinch a berth before the final weekend.

Even if we continue to have lots of (ahem) “bad luck” We are very likely to at worst still control our destiny going into the final weekend against a (hopefully) beatable opponent…
