I think with the recently finished sports we're up by a coupe points still. Neither of us have men's outdoor T&F or beach volleyball, so it's down to women's outdoor T&F, softball, and baseball. I have no idea about T&F, but we're one spot behind them in baseball and 4 spots behind them in softball. Hopefully softball can continue to improve and can make up ground there. Either way it's gonna be neck and neck to the end. Either way, it would be pretty awesome to step in and compete to win the conference cup right away, especially considering we don't compete in any men's T&F/CC sports, which is 3 of the 19 sports that make up the cup (there's only a few BBV programs, so that doesn't make much of a difference). Add to that that the SBC doesn't sponsor our two best programs, which would have easily wrapped the cup up for us. Go Dukes.
I think if we had moved to the SB 5 years ago the quality of our teams would of finished one or two most, years, if not all years, and we'd had "at least" 3 bowl games.
And that's not even including Field Hockey, and Woman's lacrosse which the SB does not sponsor.
Basically 1 team from either the AAC, MAC, or Sunbelt makes a New Year's Day bowl game. It's certainly possible JMU could of done that over the prior 5 years under Houston & Cig.

RE: JMU's first year in the Sun Belt
No doubt. History could have gone either way. JMU could have been worse than they are in the transition, JMU could have better than they are in the transition. Most likely, they would have been similar to how they are in the transition.
The only sport hat should have taken a little longer to get up to speed was football since it would be jumping from 63 scholarships to 85. COVID and the temporary increase to scholarships allowed a quicker advance in 2022.
All other sports had no hurdles to jump. They were already there with boatloads of NCAA playoff appearances and multiple national championships before ever thinking of joining the Sun Belt.
The Sun Belt was ecstatic to get JMU. That we knew and that we know.

So if a school doesn't have a particular sport, JMU's success there doesn't really count? Interesting. Anyway, our women's tennis and golf programs should get some good points, as we lost the finals in tennis and had a great season in golf except for the SBC tournament.

I knew we’d be fine. We did what we knew we would in every sport. My only legit concern was women’s hoops, and Coach O made me a believer. I’m not surprised at all. I’m more surprised by how crappy ODU turned out to be. Lotta hot air blowing out of Norfolk.

It does count, just like it hurts us in the cup to not have any men's T&F teams. Sorry if I worded something strangely. We're missing more Sunbelt sports than South Alabama is, so we're at a disadvantage. And in sports that have a tournament, the tournament finish is what matters, so our great season (especially finish) in women's golf doesn't matter in the cup standings because they finished 8th in the tournament (finished 8th), Women's Tennis was great though. And points are determined by number of programs in that sport sponsored by the SBC. So the worst team gets 1, the best team gets points equal to the number of teams in that sport. Interestingly, it's out of the TOTAL teams, not just full-SBC teams. So for men's soccer, for instance, Marshall got 8 points in Men's Soccer even though there are only 6 SBC teams.
EDIT: Correction...I went back and looked at the numbers again. Each team gets points based on regular season finish IF they have a standard regular season schedule. For sports that aren't team vs. team (T&F, golf, etc.) they award points based on the conference tournament. If I'm correct, the easiest way to understand this is if there's a table under the 'standings' tab of the SBC website for that sport, it'll be based off of the regular season. If it doesn't, it's based off of the tournament. So women's tennis we'll finish 2nd. Men's tennis we'll finish 7th (while South Alabama finished tied #1). Also, who knew ODU had such good tennis programs...both were outright or tied for #1 in the SBC. So of the 4 sports that just finished, women's tennis is great, the rest were ROUGH for JMU. MTEN at #7, WGOLF and MGOLF at #8 IIRC. Let's hope baseball can stay on a roll and softball can have a good tournament.
