Memphis Area and Ole Miss Transfers Look to Play Key Roles for A-State in 2023
Not a lot of Memphis area players on their roster but the ones that are drew praise form Butch Jones this spring, and look like they will all contribute in 2023.

Collierville, TN native DE Ethan Hassler (6-3, 245, JR) had an outstanding spring and is a team leader as a starter at DE.

Briarcrest Christians' Keyron Crawford (6-5, 240, SO), may have been as impressive as any player on their team this spring, and is at the top of the Depth chart at the other DE spot, ahead of touted P5 transfer Blayne Toll (6-5, 275, rJR)

LB Javonte Mackey (6-3, 230 rFR) out of Whitehaven- who Jones says is the fastest player on the team, also had an outstanding spring, and while not expected to start should see considerable pt at LB.

Briarcrest Christians' Luke Coleman (6-4, 296, rJR) has transferred in from Navy and should add some maturity, and depth on the OL.

As far as true freshmen Southaven, MS DT Ian Jeffries (6-4, 265, FR) could be in line for pt as a true.

It looks like all the Ole Miss transfers: OG Jalen Cunningham (6-5, 350, SR), OT Tobias Braun (6-7, 315, rSO) and OT Hamilton Hall (6-5, 315, GT) are making a strong push to start on the OL.

Edited note: Red-shirt OL Saidou Ba (6-6, 302) out of PURE Youth in Memphis is also in the mix on the OL, and there are several PWO's from the Memphis area on their roster.

He just helped them bring in their AD and Men's Basketball coach from Alabama, so I would say he is there as long as he likes.

While they will again be one of the youngest teams in FBS, the recruiting gurus rated both his recruiting classes as the best in the SBC and many played a lot last year so the 2023 team is a little more experienced group overall, and it is expected they will be a little better.

Despite their youth, and some key injuries, they were close to turning the corner last year-they were ahead in eight games in the fourth quarter, and it was more the youth and inexperience of their depth, especially in the trenches, that did them.

Their focus this year has been in adding older players in the trenches on both sides of the ball, to help out those youngsters who were forced to play before they were ready.

RE: Memphis Area and Ole Miss Transfers Look to Play Key Roles for A-State in 2023
The only position on their team that did look as good as 2022 this spring was the QB position where they are replacing James Blackman.

They only had two scholarship players available in rFR Jaxon Daley (6-2, 209) and true freshman Jaylen Raynor (6, 200lb) who joined them at mid-term. Both are talented athletes but their youth and inexperience showed at times. Neither looked ready to start.

Have a couple of PWO's in Freshman Will Prichard (6-3, 195lb)-who looked pretty good in the spring game, and red-shirt freshman Tyler Beasley (6-2, 175lb). Not sure of their stories- most seem to think like a lot of HS QB's they got lost in the shuffle when so many QB's hit the Portal , but both held P5 offers at times in the recruiting process.

They will add former VOL J.T. Shrout (6-2, 215)-who spent last year at Colorado, and true freshman Christian Hunt (6-6, 220 FR) in June.

While they did not look bad at all this spring, the other position that Jones says still needs shoring up before this fall is the interior of the DL, where they are replacing former VOL John Mincey (6-4, 292) and T.W. Ayers (6-2, 275), and red-shirt freshman Deris Jackson (6-2, 315lb)- who did not play at all last year, decided to enter the Portal..

They added Portal transfer Micah Bland (6-3, 327lb, GT) at mid-term and he exited spring as a starter. The only other upper classmen on their roster is Treviance VJ Bronson (6-2, 275) who transferred in last year, as did Vandy transfer Sophomore Terion Tank Sugick (6-2, 275). Sugick was hurt this spring.

Again, they did not look bad at all this spring, and are more physical that last year , and they have some talented youngsters on their roster and more set to join them in June. Like the OL where they had a lot of starters and backups returning but added five transfers- four will probably start, Jones wants to add some bigger, stronger, older players on the DL.

All the other position groups looked to be better than last year. .
