We and UTHSC would be just stumbling across each other as far as research goes. We would be vying for the same research dollars unless we go in a completely different direction with our research.

Maybe an association with Lebonheur focusing on pediatric research might be more fruitful.

Simply put: No.

UTHSC already has an association with SJCRH.

Plus a world-renowned cancer research facility of their own.

There just may not be an opportunity for an upstart medical school to create an association with SJCRH.

We do have a good one already. The problem there is hotel workers don't normally end up wealthy. Doctors do. It's not the same.

Believe we have a strong foundation to build from in our Business, Engineering, Earth Quake research, and Law schools.

We need to elevate each to the next level and then develop some advanced research projects.

The area is renowned for several industries but don't think they would make a good research project.

The music industry is interesting but not what you will call advanced research material.

Transportation is another industry where the area is well known. The 55/40 junction in West Memphis is one of the highest volume junctions in the nation for truck cargo.

Then of course you have FedEx and the world's busiest airport after midnight.

Memphis is also one of the best-known areas for aftermarket performance parts.

One drawback is that Memphis has a largely service-based economy.

Not really a great focus for research.

While I personally hate the idea of EVs, with oval city in the region, maybe a research facility having to do with EV power supply could be a pathway to look into.

EVs won't be the answer until they get past relying on stored energy.

Improved battery packs aren't the answer..

Batteries fail and cost too much to replace so it makes it impossible to have used EV market.

Didn't see that coming. Most around here consider UCF and USF to be diploma mills.

USF is one of three preeminent research universities in Florida alongside UF and FSU. It is also rated in the top 100 schools by U S News and World Report and ranked 118 by Forbes. Hardly sounds like a diploma mill to me.

I knew about their spending, but didn't know they were that close to achieving AAU status since that and their graduation rates were the only things I knew really knew.

What's also interesting is that ASU, who also made it, spent $677M the last recorded FY and they do not have a medical school.

https://news.asu.edu/20221216-arizona-im...t-20-years

Just announced yesterday they were going to create one.

South Florida is no slouch academically.

It's UCF that has 17 million undergrads.

Not only are we an R1 research university now.

With the latest realignment, the AAC has more AAU schools than the Big XII.

If we chose to attempt the impossible and try to gain AAU membership?

What should be the direction of our academic focus?

Egyptology isn't going to be the field that leads us.

Medical research would fit in great if not for UT Memphis.

The city has a footprint in the service industry, but that field would not be AAU-worthy.

Is there currently a field of study/research that could grow enough to bring the school to AAU level or will we need to start and grow another field of study/research?

According to Wikipedia: "The association ranks its members using four criteria: research spending, the percentage of faculty who are members of the National Academies, faculty awards, and citations. "

I concur with the other poster: Medical Research is probably the one area Memphis could focus on to drive research spending. Either that or to drop spending into Engineering. It feels like Memphis could thrive with a school aimed towards great Engineering.

(Strangely, both Iowa State dropped out of AAU in 2022). There's only 63 schools in AAU so it seems like it shouldn't be a problem now that we're R1.

But I don't know much conference politicking.

invitation only and requires the approval of 3/4 of current members.

not sure if that is 3/4 of US members or all members.

medicine would be likely the best field, but is there room for a second medical school in town with UT Memphis?

Believe will take several fields of excellence in order to reach AAU status.

Memphis is probably big enough for a second medical school. Nashville has two. We can do it! (They have Vanderbilt and Meharry Medical College).

But I agree - it definitely will. It's definitely an opportunity the university needs to pursue. I'd help but uh...poverty lol.

There is a new medical school planned in Memphis. Baptist Health Sciences is planning an Osteopath med school on their campus in the medical district and have been pre-approved to start recruiting students for Fall 2024.
https://baptistleader.org/article/bhsu-c...editation/

It wouldn't surprise me if UTHSC is the furthest med school from their flagship campus in the country (389 miles and a different time zone.) Arkansas' is 189 miles. Maybe one day UT could build a new med school in Knoxville and UTHSC could transition to Memphis HSC.

Or maybe that should be at a trade school and not at a research university. Before Bass bought HI the campus of Holiday Inn University was in Memphis. it was a world class trade school.

After Lori Loughlin tried to pay USC a half million to get her daughters into their school, I'm never gonna listen to the old academic arguments again.
