Maybe the most disappointing team at Rice
I know I’m usually fairly positive (compared to many here). And I know this subject has some competition. But as far as I’m concerned, the Rice team that is most disappointing to me is the golf team.

The coach (Justin Emil) has been at Rice for 12 years, and seems to recruit well enough. But the golfers don’t improve from year to year for the most part, and very few have had professional success (Mitchell Meisner being one exception). Academic schools have done quite well in college golf, and one would think conference affiliation would matter less than climate and facilities.

The other part that is frustrating is we have lost some good golfers recently to injury (our best golfer Raghav Chugh isn’t playing this week at the CUSA championships) or just a quick transfer. We had a freshman golfer from England named Henry Daly who started his college career in great fashion this year, but he lasted just four tournaments before I guess he went back home?

We are also wildly inconsistent. In any regard, when I just checked, we were last at the CUSA championships which started today. And without Chugh, I doubt we will improve much.

RE: Maybe the most disappointing team at Rice
Riceowls.com didn't bother to include a link to the conference tournament's live stats page, so here it is:

https://results.golfstat.com/public/lead...&tid=27668

After the first day, we're +22 ... 8th out of 10 teams ... 4 shots ahead of WKU & UTEP ... and 10 shots behind 7th place FAU.

Early this morning (Pacific time), I checked and was delighted to see our Owls in 1st place (at -1)!! 02-13-banana02-13-banana

I took a screenshot:

Bummer that it didn't last.

RE: Maybe the most disappointing team at Rice
I have long wondered why we devote scarce resources to a men's golf team. They don't play on-campus, there does not seem to be much benefit to the general population, etc.

I have been told when this topic has come up previously, though, that the team is basically entirely self-funded by previous large donations. I can't vouch for that... I wonder if it is true.

RE: Maybe the most disappointing team at Rice
My impression, based on reading the Parliament, is that the most disappointing team at Rice is our management team.

Good points, but I am not sure what schools do have an on-campus golf course. TCU used to have an adjacent course, but they expanded the campus onto it, dorms and other buildings, their baseball stadium. No idea where they play or practice now.

My impression is that the golf team is largely supported by the well-known Rice donor who also sponsors a large collegiate golf tournament in Cabo each year (that Rice is continually invited to despite being a far worse program than most of the other participants).

Back when Rice gave Owl Club members financial results, the golf team came closer to breaking even than any other sport—men or women. That’s because of those donors referenced above.

Right... many golf courses are not on-campus. Other sports at least provide an opportunity for alums and current students to get together in a communal setting on-campus. It helps forge and maintain a connection to the school. You don't get this with a golf team. What does Rice "get" out of maintaining a golf team?

It sounds like I have a problem with the golf team and I absolutely don't. I just think it's a interesting idea that Rice fields a men's golf team (when the opportunity to field men's sports teams is limited). Would Rice not be better served with a men's lacrosse team? Varsity rugby? Swimming?

Golf has a relatively small squad so it's probably not a huge budget item. I have no idea what their cost center looks like per athlete. If it's mostly covered by an interested donor then it's a non-issue.

Notre Dame has two.

Vanderbilt, the #1 golf team in the nation currently, plays at a home course that is 18 miles from campus. I don't think that's our issue.

In other golf news, Mitchell Meissner has had a really tough year on the Korn Ferry tour. He's only made one cut.

I can wrap my head around Vandy using their SEC TV money to field a men's golf team. Less so at Rice but again, if there is a benefactor of the team then it makes sense.

We used to have a men's swimming team.

TAMU. Not sure that’s where the Aggies practice, but there is an on campus course.

Update - Aggie I know well just confirmed the Aggie golf team practices at Traditions, a local course in an upscale community to which many/most well-to-do Aggies aspire to retire. His comment -“The on campus course is for peasants.” I’ve played it. Not a bad course. Guess I’m a peasant.

As I said initially, we’re wildly inconsistent. Today we were good with the top score of any team (-4). We are within fighting shape at least of making it to match play with another good round of stroke play tomorrow.

We do have a shot at match play as you note (4 shots off 4th place), but Jay Kirchdorfer is also T4 in the individual competition, only 3 shots back.
