He'll get a chance somewhere. Whether he makes it or not is up to him

Clearly, the only reason he was at Memphis or Eastern Michigan was for this moment right here. One more year playing with less talented teammates against equally less talented competition is time wasted in his case. Maybe he gets crushed and discovers he isn’t NBA material. That’s what happens to the majority of players with pro aspects. Here’s hoping he beats the odds.
I mean, his career high game according to that article was a loss. It reminds me of that guy that got close to Pistol Pete's 3-year scoring record with a COVID year. Sure he scored a ridiculous amount of points, but his team was left out of the postseason for having a sub-500 record. Does the NBA care about that kind of thing, or are they just looking for scorers?
True on all accounts. I’m just saying that by staying at E. Michigan it would simply be more of the same. If anything, another year there probably lessens his chances of getting a fair shot. No one needs to see another year of that. He’s still plenty young though, so there will be teams willing to invest in his development. They can get him to g-league now and see what they can do with him. Though I hope he makes it (simply because I like a good story), the odds aren’t that great.
Plus there's the increased likelihood of sustaining and injury which could hamper his game and endanger his ability to get paid. It literally might be now or never for the kid. And his dad.

They generously list him at 170lbs, but he’s likely closer to 155-160. He’ll get beat up in the GLeague & his chances of sustaining injury seem far greater. The average age for a player in the g league is 25… a man earning a paycheck. If I were advising the kid, I’d prefer he have at least another year of physical development on the college level. He does have skill, but he plays smaller than his size.

He wouldn't sniff the court on the Grizzlies current G-League roster ...

Bates is a perfect example of why the NBA instituted the one and done rule and why they kept it.
