Gaines is one of the most frustrating players I've ever watched at UAB. Super talented, but terrible decision making and too many times he just wouldnt mentally show up for games. If he stays fine, if he's gone that's fine also. Good luck to him but he is far from an NBA level player. I assume he will be in the G league or playing overseas.

Second-Round Pick in 2023 NBA Draft.

All that said, I hope he returns and gets another year of growth.

I want him back and i think he has been painted in a very negative light on here. I have had nothing but very positive interactions with him. The other players off the court all really seemed to like him. He was coachable at end of season and did improve greatly. He would revert for a play or two, but not the body language he was showing early in the season. He has a bright future (if he improves his jumper, and cuts down turnovers) and is NBA caliber where they have an open lane with Defensive 3 seconds and Illegal Defense calls.

Agreed.

BTW I have not seen where he has declared for the draft or obtained an agent. I could have missed it.

I find it interesting that the article basically says that he's not ready for the NBA yet, yet projects him as a 2nd round pick. IMO, that's the worst thing that could happen to him. He'd wind up riding the bench or exiled to the G League and forgotten. He really needs more tutelage on control and needs to muscle up his frame.

RE: Blazer Victory Podcast ($): UAB Basketball Recruiting Update 4/24
As much as I've dogged him, I also fully acknowledge that 75+% of his deficiencies as a player simply revolve around correcting mistakes and playing smarter. If he did that, and didn't even improve one other aspect of his game, he would probably be getting drafted 100%. Sure, he needs to add weight, get stronger, improve his jumper, be a more efficient scorer, and finish better at the rim, but if he simply corrected most of the basic, rudimentary mistakes he makes, he would be so, so much better.

There's an important point I think a lot of people gloss over in this debate about him, though - his age. He's 22 already, and played THREE full seasons in college at high level programs. That is an old college player. Pro sports definitely factor in break out age in a major way. A 3-4 year, 22-year-old college player who is still raw and making the mistakes of an unproven freshman (to be fair, I haven't even seen a lot of freshmen make the mistakes he does), is a major red flag. Sure, he can improve. But to be that raw and that mistake prone at his age and level of experience is a major red flag.

People love to compare him to Ja Morant. Compare Ja in year TWO of college to EG at year THREE of college. Light years difference.

Pro players surprise me all the time. I never thought in a million years that Kenny freakin' Lofton would drop a 40 piece in a legitimate NBA game. But the cards are still stacked against EG IMO. You can be the best athlete in the world, but he is still an "old," raw, undersized, position-less, and incredibly mistake prone player at this time. His best bet is to come back to UAB, ball out, improve his well-known issues, and then get drafted next year. I could be wrong, but I just don't see it going well for him this year if he decides to stay in the draft.

If he's willing to come back, put the work in, be coachable, and improve his decision making, I would welcome him with open arms.

He's been the hardest player to watch and understand for me in 25 years of watching and playing basketball.

Best of luck to him whatever he decides. I think we will have a good team regardless.

Not sure why people are reading more into this than what is actually a pretty simply situation. Every player worth a darn enters the draft evaluation and would be in most cases advised by their coach to do so.

At UAB, HaHa and Jelly are recent players who did so. The evaluation is important to their development.

EG may decide he is just done with college and wants to take his chances in the pros, which is perfectly within his rights to do. He might also be perfectly content to make money overseas or in the G while developing his game. Perfectly within his rights too.

Or he may take the feedback and determine his best path is to return to school and work on his game here at UAB.

I just don’t see it as a big deal. You want players good enough to go through this process.

Wasn't his first NBA game, but I think it was his first NBA start.

^^^ that. I’m aware which teams played the game, but those weren’t nba level players playing on either roster.

I think I criticized EG a couple of times on our losses but I stopped project mockingbird and repeating the same talking points like others on the board.

I like EG a lot and hope he returns but would like him to make it in pro sports too whether its today or in the future.

according to the nba site, he can yank his name out by 5/31 to keep his eligibility.

If he fixed his decision making deficits, I’d stop being a mockingbird. He hasn’t.

His miraculous in season turnaround you referenced netted him 4 points, 1-4 shooting (0-3 from 3), 4 fouls, 1A/1TO against UNT and 13 points on 5-14 shooting, 2A/3TO against Utah valley. NOT impressive from a 3 year player with NBA aspirations. But I’m sure there was some amazing dunk or block thrown in there to make you oooh and ahhh..

He did get better but there was no miraculous turnaround. He largely made the same mistakes throughout the entire season. He’d have good games and then Revert back to old habits
