Marshall/Huntington Trip
Just booked travel to Huntington to see us take on the Herd. Planning on getting there Wednesday afternoon and leaving the last possible moment on Friday.

Figured I'd start the thread to figure out who's going, restaurant/bar recommendations, transportation, etc.

Anyone else planning on making the trip/been there before?

RE: Marshall/Huntington Trip
This should be an ideal week night trip for me, but work kills it for me this year. Hold it down for us!

Weeknight road trips when you've got kids isn't feasible. Maybe I can pull it off one day when they go off to college.

My wife is graciously letting me go (at least for now) with a then 10 mo old. I figure it's all over when they get older, so taking advantage when I can.

I used to take my two (at the time) year old to road trip games and leave the wife at home. She liked the free from kid day.

Yeah I'd be given the okay to go no issue if I took the kids. But at that point... might as well just watch it on TV. haha

RE: Marshall/Huntington Trip
Never been for a game, just have stopped there for kinda random little stops. Short little stops for a Sheetz it always seems a little sketchy and to be blunt seems like lots of meth head types around. We stopped and ate at the "Marshall Hall of Fame Cafe" on the way home from Louisville though and that was a pretty cool spot in a much cooler area.

We're definitely going this year for football, hopefully MBB works out too. Not sure how many will be in our group, sounds like at least 5 right now. I'm sure Marshall fans over on the SBC board could be a ton of help on bars, restaurants, tailgating, etc.

Saw this request when searching for new posts and had to recommend Fro Stop. Went there on a road trip because I wanted to see Marshall's campus. Cool place for a great hot dog & shake. Nothing fancy but definitely a good experience for lunch.

RE: Marshall/Huntington Trip
I’d recommend staying downtown (Delta, Doubletree) on 3rd Avenue. The entirety of that area is walkable to all of the local bars and restaurants micro breweries that you’d be interested in. Lots of outdoor eating options and open container 100% ok (as in legal) in this area of town. Black Sheep, The Peddler, Bahnhof, Backyard and the Market (giant 2 story local eatery food court) to name just a handful. It’s a college town (obviously) so no doubt be various live music down there that time of year too. Summit is pretty sweet for beer or bourbon, LaFontaine’s roof top bar for booze and cigars. 4th Avenue has more of the local vibe/college bar scene which all of us are too old to enjoy but have at it. Huntington is nice but certainly has its warts (West End/East End). Yes there are homeless folks and drug addicts but unless you hang out near an interstate overpass or in the shadiest parts of town you’ll likely not encounter any. If you have ever walked around DC/Richmond/Norfolk/Baltimore you’ve seen much much worse.

Parking is readily available on gameday as most of the businesses provide pay to park in their lots on gameday (in this case game night). Walk over to the West side of the stadium and mingle with the big Herd donors and the tailgate scene is pretty solid. May be a bit muted on a Thursday night. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. At the very least 20th Street will be blocked for a concert and jump zone for the kids.

Also nothing wrong with staying at Kinetic Park by the interstate, but you’ll be driving/UBERing more from that locale. If you’re bringing the kids and/or need to fill a day with activities this may be helpful: https://visithuntingtonwv.org/

Culturally very similar to Chattanooga or Asheville. This is the corner of country meets city, liberal and conservative. Don’t be surprised to see an Xterra with a 6 inch lift flying a 5 ft rainbow flag off the back and in the next lane an F350 rolling smoke and a Let’s Go Brandon sticker as big as the entire back window, a yellow GT3, and a family in a station wagon. It’s America and ‘Merica all at once and Huntington definitely fights above its weight.

Fantastic response. I’ll be staying at Delta. I hate to be this guy, but any issues walking back towards the area from the stadium after the game? It will be two dudes, no kids or women, so wondering if it’s “safe” to do so.

Zero issues. Straight down 3rd Avenue (albeit 11 blocks - 5 of which will be on campus). When we win, just be respectful of the pride of Herd fans and they’ll be respectful to you. I’m sure you’ll encounter some idiot fan or two but 99% will be welcoming and thank you for visiting.

Great. Still haven't encountered any issues at WVU, NC St., App St, etc so I doubt I'll have any there. Appreciate the intel!
