UC Bearcats in MLB
I thought this might be handy for those interested or curious. As far as I can tell there are currently 4 in MLB:
Ian Happ - Chicago Cubs
Josh Harrison - Phillies
Joey Wiemer - Brewers
Ryan Noda - A's
BTW, Happ just signed a 3-year $61M extension starting next year.
Feel free to add any updates including Bearcats in the minors...

Cam Alldred has kind of been right on the borderline within the Pirates organization as a relief pitcher.

So as MLB contracts seem to continue to grow exponentially, Happ may now be the highest paid former Bearcat ever (not adjusted for inflation of course).
Here's hoping he still loves UC and can provide some support for helping Bearcat baseball become more competitive in the Big 12.

I'd have to guess Harrison still has him there just due to longevity, but thats almost certainly the biggest individual contract for a Bearcay baseball alum.

Harrison has made $40 mil. but he's 35 and making just $1.5 mil this season. Youkilis made $56 mil. So it looks like Happ's 3-year deal is worth more than Youk made in his entire career.

Wow...I'm a dummy, can't believe Youk slipped my mind.
That Happ deal is just a sign of the times. You wouldn't find many utility men with a career .250 BA getting $10M a year even going back 8-10 years, let alone $20M.

Agreed that salaries are getting crazy, but that's not really an accurate description of Happ. Yes, he's played multiple positions, but has been a full-time player with the Cubs since he was called up in 2017, aside from a stint in the minors in 2019. A career OPS over .800 will get you paid.

"Utility player" gets you higher pay today.
In the past, utility players were dudes who weren't good enough to earn a regular starting job. But today, flexibility in the field is a valuable asset to a manager who is trying to maximize the matchup for every at-bat.
Happ has had 1171 plate appearances over the last two years, which is the highest of any Cub (and ahead of #2 by 201 PA over that time). He's been in their top-9 in PA for 5 of the last 6 seasons.
