Almost there! What I wonder is if the team we are playing is having to raise the funds for the championship game.

The thread title is a bit of a misleading one sort of. They are heading to the Nationals tournament (they finished second last year). They need the funds to help support them while they are there. I assume all teams will need to raise funds depending on their sponsors. (Our club Rugby team has sponsors but I assume they only go so deep into the pockets).

Goal achieved thanks to a very generous donation of $3,415 made by an anonymous person. They are now over $20,000.

I think funding. My alma mater is a lot smaller than Memphis but we play in the top level because rugby is an official sport within the athletic department.

So is it a sanctioned NCAA sport and we play in the club level?

There are many sanctioned NCAA sports the U of M does not participate in. Gymanstics, Swimming, Hockey, and more. The athletic budget is stretched thin as it is. What is important here is that the Memphis club is competing for a national championship!

I know that captain obvious. And every sport at the U of M whether it’s sanctioned or club all compete for a national championship. The baseball and softball are competing for a national championship too.
So I assume it is a sanctioned NCAA due to your answer. So the rest of your statement was not needed bc I know we don’t have a wrestling, rowing , lacrosse team , etc.

no it is not a sanctioned NCAA sport, so these championships are outside the NCAA. However, my alma mater sponsors the sport and gives scholarships and cover travel costs, etc.

Memphis plays at 9:06, 12:46, and 4:04 on Friday. Games will be on YouTube. Saturday's schedule won't be known until after pool play.

Seems like a lot of games in one day for such a tough sport.

It's 7s which is 7v7 and they play 14 minute games. So much different than the normal rugby union which is 15v15 and an 80 minute game.

Game is much more open and is a 1v1 game. USA have one of the best players in the world in Perry Baker in the 7s game.

Memphis beats Washington, loses to NC State, their last game was postponed. If they win that, they'll guarantee a spot in the championship bracket
