Didn’t ask if we could afford hockey. Should we add hockey? Based on my research - yes we should and a long term plan could be pieced together on how to make it happen. At some point, dinosaurs became extinct because they couldn’t adapt. If we played the poor woe is me, then there wouldn’t be an SAPC. Thankfully Creighton doesn’t play the woe is me he takes action.

Not a great analogy.

The better analogy would be a new stadium vs. hockey arena.

SAPC was simply a case of making the dollars work. Actually Christian Spears wanted a 2-phase SAPC. Ended up with what we got.

There’s a link earlier in the thread with MAC attendance for hockey. EMU needs a long term plan to add ice arena on campus while baseball slowly evaporates.

If this arena were to be located on the academic campus, where, pray tell? Even at the athletic campus, where? This is just not feasible for the costs involved.
Even if Eastern were to have a hockey team, there are only a handful of teams in the MAC that do, so, there would be no MAC Hockey League. Fans are just thirsting for games against St. Cloud State, or Bemidji State.

Indeed.

Spears wanted a 2-phase SAPC with an indoor track where the SAPC is now. The 2nd phase was to be in the NW corner of Rynearson.

We didn't have the $ and anyway there were soil issues there.

That would have been where money would have been spent if we had it.

There was a plan to build it inside the Convo but the cost at the time was an additional 15 million. then there was some kind of issue with ground below and the cost of keeping it cold enough.

Interesting….but I’m glad they didn’t make the rink off campus. EMU needs a sport for on campus kids to attend just like I had in the late 80s.

I came to this thread hoping that someone posted they won the Powerball. Alas.

Here's some food for thought:

IF EMU added hockey I would assume they would join the CCHA - a conference that includes BGSU, Ferris, LSSU, Michigan Tech, NMU, and some schools in Minnesota and South Dakota. The arena size range for this conference is 1000 - 5000. (BGSU on the high end - St Thomas in MN on the low end). OR they could be in the NCHC - with WMU. The NCHC has teams in Colorado, Ohio, Minnesota, Nebraska, and North Dakota. WMU and Miami OH are in it - but its such a bigger footprint. CCHA would make more sense.

Now lets revisit the Convo - lets be GENEROUS and say that the $15 million price point is still a thing (it probably isnt but whatever im posting on a message board. ill do what i want) and lets say that ice technology has improved so that they can keep it cold affordably. Theoretically EMU could be the site of ANOTHER hockey team. in the OHL there are teams in Flint and Saginaw. Flint's arena seats 4365. Saginaw seats 5527. In the USHL the USMNDT seats 3500 in Plymouth and Muskegon seats 5100. You could see a Junior team there and it make sense.

I guess what I'm saying is that the only way i can see this happening is if I win the power-ball.
