Is the Big East the best conference in College Basketball?
Some numbers right quick ...
- Connecticut tied for 4th in the Big East regular season standings, finished runner-up in the conference tournament and yet cake-walked to the National Championship
- Big East went 12-4 (.750) in the NCAA Tournament, best by far among all conferences. The rest of the P6: ACC (7-5, .583); Big XII (9-7, .563); SEC (9-8, .529); B1G LOL (6-8, .429); RIP Pac-12 (3-4, .423)
- UConn has won five NC's in the last quarter century. Duke and North Carolina are next with three each.
- The Big East has won three of the last seven national championships going back to Villanova's titles in 2016 and '18. The ACC and Big XII have won two each. The SEC hasn't won a NC since 2012. UConn alone has cut down the nets 4 times since the mighty B1G's last championship in 2000 back when many Americans still didn't have cell phones or e-mail addresses
- ESPN kicked out its "way too early" Top 25 this morning: 1. UConn 2. Marquette 10. Creighton
- From what we've been told, St. John's and Georgetown have major coaching upgrades in store
Is it accurate to call the Big East college basketball's premier conference?

The crown stays on your head until someone knocks it off. That's my philosophy about it.

Villanova's dynasty is over so they are slowly sliding down. Maybe they pick it back up but the coach isnt proven. So no you arent the best conference when 1 team is far ahead of everyone else and its not balanced.

Big East was certainly elite this year, and it's hard to argue that UConn isn't the most successful program in the time frames that are relevant. Big Ten is always overrated and their top teams, other than Michigan State, usually underperform. PAC-12 is a marginal power conference at best with UCLA basketball gone. They really only have Arizona as a bell cow now.

Top to bottom, I think it's still pretty clearly the Big 12, but the top programs in the Big East are outstanding and the conference should be very proud.

To me the top teams are how a conference should be measured though. Who gives a rip about how bad Georgetown was. Come March, that's utterly meaningless. What matters is how your top teams do. Depth is way overrated.

RE: Is the Big East the best conference in College Basketball?
They certainly have the best team in the nation this year but I don’t think that they are the best conference at the moment.
Ask me again in 5 years. If Georgetown and St. Johns improve, Villanova returns to form and the rest of the conference does not slide… then yeah, they will have a pretty good argument to make.

All of the teams are considered, not just the best.

Well, the NET rating and RPI care about bad Georgetown was, which impacts seeding decisions, which impacts March outcomes.

depth is way overrated. Part of the reason why the Big East was so good this year was they had 5 teams that seperated themselves. 4 of them got top 6 seeds in the tourney so they didn't have to see a top 2 seed right off the jump in the tourney. That's why the league had their best tourney record since 2013 realignment.

Gonzaga does not make the WCC one of the best basketball conferences. Depth is very important too.

Depth at the top is what matters. Your bottom doesn't mean much IMO.

No kidding. One didn't even need to finish .500 within their conference and could have barely bumped over .500 overall and still impress a committee enough to grab bids and/or consideration. Those teams weren't from the Big East.
FWIW, this was huge for the Big East. The "Villanova & Friends Conference" thing is no more.
