Utah Jazz owner meets with NHL
On a recent trip to New York, the owner of the Utah Jazz met with NHL officials. They have an interest in each other. Won't be soon, but Utah should be added to future NHL expansion/relocation talks.

Why would you want that?

I would LOVE to see UConn Close.

See how stupid that sounds?

"Can't have a team in non-traditional markets. S/b Canada & North US only."

As the article points out towards the end, the Jazz Arena isn't even suited for the NHL. They'd have to build a new arena.

This meeting will just end up a footnote. Houston, Quebec City, & Atlanta are a clear top-3 as far as who's most realistic.

RE: Utah Jazz owner meets with NHL
I recall Kansas City also wanting a winter franchise (NBA or NHL). It could get really crowded with the number of cities wanting in the NHL.

I personally thought that we would see a MLB team in Utah before NHL, but I guess that's not the case.

I do agree with the article that when the Winter Olympics come back to Utah, it will lead to an NHL friendly arena being built. The ECHL Utah Grizzlies play in the Maverik Center and several years ago the director of the center knew how much it would cost to get the arena up to NHL standards. The G-League Utah Stars also play there so they have a working relationship with Smith (owner of the Jazz). I could see upgrades or a rebuilt of the Maverik Center being an option in the next 5-7 years.

When’s the earliest SLC could get another Olympics? I’d guess 2042.

They are bidding for 2030 or 2034.

US hasn't hosted since SLC did in 2002, and North America hasn't hosted since Vancouver in 2010

Since then:
2014 - Sochi, Russia
2018 - PyeongChang, South Korea
2022 - Beijing China
2026 - Milano-Cortina, Italy

Note, Turin Italy hosted in 2006

Others potentially bidding in 2030:

Sapporo, Japan - Hampered by bad taste and scandals relating to 2020 Tokyo Games
Stockholm Sweden - will determine this month
Switzerland is considering as well.

The papers have speculated that if SLC doesn't get 30, they will get 34. But time will tell.

The team could play in the Maverick Center until a new arena was built. And considering the allowance made for the Coyotes, the size should be an issue.

Possibility - but I bet the NHL wants to wait for a couple things:

Will the Coyotes get a new arena - and if they don't, what options are there.
Will SLC get the 2030 Winter Olympics - they can piggyback that into a new regular NHL Arena

Right now the NHL is at 32 teams. No Pro League has gone over that amount (yet).
