RE: ECU fans, I need help with a Carolina BBQ road trip

Both were good, although considerably different. Sam Jones' meat was tender, but I didn't care for the bits of crispy pork skin added into the meat. Also, the meat had a slightly different texture and taste, likely due to the whole hog style.
The sides were good. I usually don't prefer sweet slaw, but that was pretty nice. Baked beans were decent. Sweet potato cornbread style cake was not good. Had my first bottle of Cheerwine. Loved it. I LOVE vinegar sauce (always have), but the table bottle was WAY too fiery for my taste.
Lexington BBQ is much closer to what I grew up on, but under no circumstances did it come close to the best I've had. Just above average, at best. And the sauce was not very good.
But it was fun trying both. Carolina trip has been awesome overall. More to come.
clt s recommends drinking a sun drop as well.

Generally I like Texas Pete products. This one is a straight up FRAUD!
First off, they're based in Winston-Salem, so definitely not an Eastern Carolina origin (or Texas either for that matter).
NEXT! Just look at these ingredients:
That's right, ingredient #2 is........ TOMATO PASTE!
No way, no how this is an Eastern Carolina sauce. Sure as **** it ain't an East Carolina sauce.

I love good old fashioned Texas Pete. I put it on almost everything. Not impressed with any of their alternative options, like their BBQ Sauce or Wing Sauce.
Every BBQ joint I went to as a kid (Winston-Salem) always had a bottle of Texas Pete & a bowl of hushpuppies on the table.

Went to 12 Bones South today. Just outside Asheville. Too dang hot in the city for a dog in a van, so we had to skip Buxton Hall.
Baby Backs were great. A. vinegar sauce good, but a bit spicy and watery for me. B. Mustard sauce really good. Slightly thinner than I prefer. Ketchup base not worth tasting. Corn pudding good, not great. Had a Cheerwine again. Good.
End of Carolina BBQ. What a trip. Two days to go in North Georgia. Different cuisine.
