If it was 11 team conferences ECU would have made it easily. Unfortunately there are a LOT more teams in the east than the west as the PAC 12 is discovering.

Extra hard pass on that ACC. Give us UMd back along with PSU and I’ll do it. If you get ND to agree…that should be easy!

I wouldn’t trade Penn State or Maryland for anything this ACC has. I would give you Va Tech if you keep Notre Dame.

Missouri was definitely an oversight.

Smack and hate are different things. I didn’t say I thought WVU was bad, I just don’t like them and don’t ever want to be in a conference with me again.

The ACC already did that.

RE: My Ideal Conference
Some of the older posters [myself included] may remember the former Metro Conference. They did a study with Raycom Sports in 1989/90 for an expanded Metro Conference [Super Conference - Metro/A10/BE] footprint...

North Division
Boston College
Cincinnati
Pittsburgh
Rutgers
Syracuse
Temple
Virginia Tech
West Virginia

South Division
East Carolina
Florida State
Louisville
Memphis State
Miami
South Carolina
Southern Mississippi
Tulane

I believe Joe Paterno was advocating for an eastern football-centric conference around the same time but it was a smaller pool of teams than those listed above. The Raycom version would've been a great conference for both football and hoops IMO.

RE: My Ideal Conference
Big Ten: Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Rutgers, Wisconsin

SEC: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

ACC: Boston College, Central Florida, Connecticut, Duke, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest

Pac "14": Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, California, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Texas Tech, UCLA, USC, Utah, Washington, Washington State

Big 12: Baylor, Houston, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, TCU, Texas A&M, West Virginia

Someone had to be in the Pac and the only other switch I could have done would be Texas Tech and (gulp) West Virginia.

Where do I sign? Ohio State would have to be paid a Caesar's Tribute to make that possible.

...

Interesting choices.

Let me see if I can come up with something similar that I'd like.

Well, here's 7 of 11 each. Add in the Sunbelt, MAC, MWC, and C-USA, and there would be 11 groups. Or just add in the 3 service academies for football, and it's 80.

Dunno why the number 11 - just sounded fun : )

Big10
Miami, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Rutgers, Syracuse
Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue

Big8
Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Northwestern, Wisconsin

SWC
Arkansas, Baylor, BYU, Houston, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech

SEC
Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana State, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

ACC
Clemson, Duke, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forrest

Big East
Boston College, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Louisville, Memphis, South Florida, Southern Mississippi, Temple, Tulane, UConn, West Virginia

PAC-10
Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford. UCLA, USC, Utah, Washington, Washington State

RE: My Ideal Conference
I love it when people continue to keep bringing up going back to regional lineups and then put in stipulations that make those types of lineups impossible to implement.

1. Anything that puts the Domers in a conference is a No Go for them (and also for those who are tired of hearing them talk about not wanting to put football in a conference).

2. If you're not factoring in rivalries (including those that cross regional lines [like USC-Notre Dame]) then you will never do it right.

3. No conference is going to voluntarily demote themselves to go back to strict regionalism.

4. If you are willing to ditch playing programs 50 miles from you and prefer to play programs 500 miles from you then you can't complain about not playing regional opponents.

5. As long as programs all over the country want to chase the dream of FBS glory then realignment will not die.

What part of the word "ideal" in the OP's title did you miss?
