The place where Dayton plays is well below.
Last plans I saw (5-6 years ago maybe) did call for “bowl” in the lower level…all theater seats, end zone bleachers and loge removed…the northern end had a level (or two) above the seats for standing at round tables and with concessions. This level also overlooked the practice facility further to the North. The lower bowl was accessed by going up steps (ones used to go up to the GA section as is now done). The Theater seats and removal of the loge would reduce capacity by about 1,000 as I recall.
Plan also called for the concourse to be widened substantially (walls being pushed out).
Those plans called for the upper level to remain pretty much as is.
I have no idea if those plans are still what is being considered. MAC Center is tired, worn and needs a major facelift.
Amen , Tired , worn and decrepit. Pity those that need a bathroom stop while attending an event. Like a third world country.
No one has mentioned that OUR Basketball program deserves better. Outstanding for more than 25 years and they continue to recruit well despite one of the oldest D1 arenas in the country.
The University came up with big money to turn the smaller ice rink into an indoor practice facility for the marching band but not a penny for MAC center. Thats truly laughable. Don’t think our fine Men’s and Women’s Hoop coaches didn’t stop and take notice.
Agree with all you mentioned except this.
Marching Band is a credited class, so it can be considered "academic." Universities can't spend tuition or taxes on extra-curricular/sports venues. I actually agree with that policy. Money for halls or arenas must come from donations.
Saying all of this the MACC is still pitiful. A hard push donation effort is needed and long overdue. We do need a new arena, but pulling it from tuition or taxes is not possible.
Also, no other university in the country has had a history of spiting the marching band like Kent State. (Drive past the current field.) Putting a sign on the already shortened field was a straight slap in the face by Cartwright. All after trying to pull the program twice. The MGF deserves this as much as the basketball program.
Yes , credited class meeting 3 times weekly.
No issue with that. All members also receive a $1000 annual scholarship .
Yes marching band at Kent also neglected.
Football and Basketball and some other sports similarly neglected in our time.
Wrestling was saved by a generous donor. I could go on but most reading this know the history.
I also never understood how dragging down one program's success to build another is a redeeming point. It might be a little personal to me when marching into the stadium one day as a runty adolescent being told by the then POKSU that we were "no good."
Point of Order: Meets 3 times/week, 2 hours/class weekly for 1 credit. (Not including games, parades, band camp, and other official university events.)
Also, $1000 puts Kent still under par with every other public school's D1 university's band program in Ohio.
All that is what it is, most university's athletic and such programs do some level of "volunteerism," and it is not a required class, so I'm not complaining. I just don't see how trashing the MGF is supposed to help build a basketball facility.

I've found that people at Kent get very defeatist. That is, if A gets something, it hurts B (using coming from someone from B). It doesn't seem to occur to people that A getting something means B can be better to and benefit from A getting it.
