God, people are idiots. The elbow wasn’t from Brett, it was another BGSU player. It was inadvertent when both players were going for the ball. Shutes flat out blatantly punched Brett in the head. She should be arrested.
Take off your ******* blue-tinted glasses.
While I thought it was an inexcusable ghetto move to sucker punch someone in that situation, it didn't seem like much of a punch because she was stepping backwards and away from the BG player when the punch landed.
The best thing to do would be to have the Memphis coaching staff have Shutes publicly apologize directly to the other player for acting like an idiot at the time of the incident and hope the BG prosecutor chooses to drop all charges.
The longer the delay, the more likely the incident gets magnified.

No, its not. It's only like that if you choose to see everything through that lens. And if you do, then you're probably an ******* and the person everyone hates at parties and family gatherings.

You’re very naive
Very snowflake of you to get worked up over sports columnists and radio personalities

That's exactly what should have been done. Maybe the staff was too busy signing their Cincinnati contracts to worry about it.

When these situations happen at & in Memphis, the national response is “typical” & it’s a knock on all of us. I’m sorry, but it is what it is.
Cheap shotting someone in the handshake line is about the worst level of sportsmanship imaginable.
Wrong is wrong... but it's the reaction. Folks want to label her a thug with a rap sheet. Come on man... so 1960ish.
SEC women's tournament this year had 8 players ejected for fighting. Don't hear many folks calling for them to be arrested and using racist terms like 'rap sheet'.
What would you call it? It certainly didn’t seem like a “heat of the moment” punch, which happens sometimes in sports. This happened 3 quarters after taking an elbow and appeared to be planned, which is why there’s a police report filed. I’m sorry, but its not 1960-ish to expect student athletes to not cheap shot each other in the hand shake line. Is basic civility asking too much? Is it 1960-ish?
I don't know if it's because we as a society are filming things more, but these last few years there seems to be a lot more fighting/sucker punches in handshake lines. It's getting to the point where I'm starting to jump on the "end handshake lines" bandwagon.
Because we encourage it…
If schools refuse to step up & address this nonsense, then eventually law enforcement will; and the answer isn’t reinforcing the uncivilty. The answer is for adults to start acting like adults.
I also lean towards the removal/reduction of discipline in schools contributing to the problem.

Everything? Nah. The political stuff going on in this thread isn't even related to the punch.

It was definitely immature, but ghetto is a little much. But yeah as mentioned the coach is gone and she's done with BB so I guess she would need to do it herself. I'm guessing she'll get a misdemeanor and a fine, but this incident is going to hang over her for a while.
West Liberty was assessed three flagrant fouls and two technical fouls.
“I think there was some composure issues,” Howlett said. “I didn’t obviously see the replays of some of those, so I can’t comment on that, but those were real detrimental to our team. We were fighting, fighting, fighting and we gave them too many free throws.”

With the coaching staff gone, the admin should have made a public apology along with the player. But that's not our admin style, they hide in their offices & write statements.

I watched that yesterday. That team lost their mind and 3 9f those fouls could have resulted in a bad injury.

Yeah. Kinda like what the blond BG player did TO SHUTES during the game, which is why Shutes missed the 2nd and 3rd quarters...

I see a difference in “in games” and “post-game handshake line”. The latter is something new to me, but I don’t watch much womens basketball.
who said they were the same. ..it was truly dumb on her part.
But the main reason this will fall away as a nothing and be unnoticed, except by people who love to badmouth Memphis (along with those who have inferiority complexes about Memphis), is because it is not a money making sport. duh
Just in general, BB is not the big money making sport. Women's BB is ho hum. It is not a money making sport--in college, or in the pros.
NOw if this woman had furnished a gun to kill someone, that would be 1000 times horrible.

Well there is a slight difference. It’s only here say that he supplied the weapon. The weapon was left in his car because they couldn’t take it in the club. All we can be sure of is he got a text to bring it. What would you charge him with? He would have to know that they were going to murder someone. He didn’t. If anything he wanted it for protection. And according to one article they were being followed and were shot at.
Now contrast that to the Lady Tiger player who is on tape punching someone.
It’s best to have all the facts.
Let’s hope the charges are dropped and hopefully this is a first time thing. I think she’s out of eligibility so the university can’t punish her
All the facts are never necessary to pass popular judgment .
Judgment is based on opinions and mindsets, my old friend.
I seem to recall inviting a player accused of rape by more than one woman to play bb at Memphis. And the facts of the hospital docs supported the charges of rape.
Hypocrisy is bothersome, as is unevenness of punishment.
As far as the reflection on Memphis goes… some of you guys care more about how things look to others than how they are …lol
This too shall pass shrug… or it won’t and the rep of Memphis will be ruined forever.
Bottom line: it was wrong. Consequences will result. Will they keep this young woman from ever playing her sport again…

Hard to prove intent during the heat of the game. But in the post game it’s easy. Two wrongs don’t make a right

Harsh, but this statement is always true. Can't do that in the handshake line ever.
