NCAA tourney thoughts: upsets
There are a lot of tourney upsets this year. It’s a very different tournament than it used to be. The seeds just don’t mean much.
  • One and dones means we don’t know the players or the teams well. Used to be, we knew Duke or Carolina and their group of juniors and seniors. Now, we’ve seen these kids since November and really have no idea who they are.
  • NIL and the portal are leading to even more turnover on team rosters, on top of the best players leaving after one year every year.
  • There are a ton more players, but only 68 teams get in. It was at 64 for many years prior to that. The result is more great players on basically the same number of teams, which equals more parity.

If you love upsets and the “Madness,” you’ve got it. I’m not saying it’s good or bad, but I am saying it’s different.

Actually the number of "upsets" was down in round one, however, they have been ones of higher magnitude.
