Only for the schools that can't pay to bring the athletes in.

Blue backer,
That’s happening now, however u r Korrrecct, when it’s legal the wealthiest schools will dominate even more.
Ike doesn’t believe TIGERNATION has the money to field more than a mediocre team.
Example we let our best receiver go to old mz

I couldn’t agree more! At one point, there was a lot of argument over giving the players a small stipend. We’ve gone from something reasonable to 100% free agency. At least professional athletes sign contracts. College football/basketball players now go to the highest bidder. With no transfer restrictions, it’s just a mess. It’s taken a lot of the fun out of college athletics for me.

The rich will get richer, the poor will just be developmental teams for those with money. I’ve donated a decent amount of money, and the vast majority comes from season tickets. I’d think that is the same for the rest of us. There is just no way I’m donating to NIL. I realize that will be our downfall, but I’m not going to pay college athletes to play here.

Ike,

Some people like it. Players that are getting paid and Universities that can afford to play. Schools with massive alumni support will completely overwhelm schools like Memphis. We’ll be a developmental team that gets them ready to play at the big $$$ schools.

You’re right, it will destroy college sports. You add NIL with no transfer restrictions and you’re paying mercenaries year to year.

Sports in societies always evolves, as it did in Ancient Greece, Rome, etc. It begins as something done for exercise and entertainment, and becomes something done solely for reward. That's where we are now.

Pro sports is unwatchable now. College sports is getting that way. It's hard to view some of the horrific officiating and not believe it is influenced toward a certain outcome. Given all of this, I now view team sports differently.

There is little doubt in my mind that the terrible officiating was not also influenced by money. However, it's not just our games, it's across the board. So for me, such crushing and inexplicable performances like yesterday hurt far less than they used to, because the sport is not what it once was.

Then problem is two things

1. Perception. I go back to when the Missouri Valley conference was the best top to bottom basketball conference in the country. Wasn’t just us and Louisville either. Bradley , Drake, Wichita I think even New Mexico St all made final 4s. For a few years there if you won the Valley you were probably going to the final 4. But somewhere along the line it became about Big State U and the money.

Which brings me to problem two which is

2. It’s a business now. Everything is done for what’s good for business. It’s why we can’t get into a power league. And I know many here will bash me but it’s all to do with demographics. Which is money based. We always want to blame the administration. We could have Zig Zigler selling for us and it wouldn’t matter. But why is it I only get an email wanting me to donate when we win? I didn’t get one last night

Can't argue with that. Spot on.

Yep

Which will severely damage the sport as a whole, imo. The magic of “the field of 64” is one thing that makes the sport great. If half of that field become “feeder schools”, as some have suggested, the magic will be gone.

That's what I have been doing since us losing the National Championship. After that loss I pledged to not take sports so serious. I still always root for the Tigers and do follow the scores but most games I still cannot watch. The wins and never enough and the loses are crushing. I hate that I can't enjoy rooting for my Alma Mater like I used too but hey, it's just sports.

That and the years after made me reevaluate my emotional ties to sports. I still watch, I still cheer, I still get excited for the big wins; but at the end of the day, it’s still entertainment.

I can always hop on my bike and ride down to the beach to relax and put my mind back in a good spot.

For many Tiger fans this is so much more than just a basketball game. I personally think that's what makes our school fan base elite.

I wouldn't want it any other way.
07-coffee307-coffee3 I hate that we lost that particular game not only because of our chances to advance in the tournament but for the individual players. The work that they put in to get there and the heartbreak for the seniors on the team. We were certainly good enough to go deep in the tournament and to lose it because of the crappy officials just makes me sick.

The officials DID NOT LOSE this game. We had the ball with less than 10 sec remaining & simply couldn't complete a pass to one of a couple of open guys. Then we couldn't defend an inbounds pass. Despite the temptation to blame others, especially the refs, we lost this game.

Couldnt agree more, passion is a good thing, if you care you care no way around it. I can tell myself all day long it doesn't matter and go take a long walk but that's just mind games, it matters to a lot

Same...but this particular game left me feeling mad/sad the next day, and it's probably been since 2008 that I felt like that.

I'm glad that at least I cared enough this year to not be quite so apathetic about it as I have been in recent years. That speaks to what Penny & this team have done.

I understand and agree completely. This was the most upset I’ve been over a game since 2008. This one stung a little more.

I felt the worst in 2008. 2009 wasn’t much better because I knew the run was over and Cal was leaving. 1986 was bad too when we got screwed by having to play a lower seeded LSU in Baton Rouge. It’s right there with the Drexel loss to me.
