NIU Wrestling
Redshirt Senior Izzak Olejnik (Bakersfield, CA) is one win away from securing All-American honors at the NCAA championships in Tulsa.

The "Blood Round" starts tonight (Friday) at 7pm central. Live on ESPN.

So far Izzak has beaten
#21 Nijenhuis from University of Oklahoma 4-3
#12 Tanner Cook from South Dakota State 8-1
#20 Holden Heller Pitt by injury default

The lone loss from #5 Quincy Monday of Princeton. Quincy is the son of 1988 Olympic Champion wrestler Kenny Monday. Izzak fell 4-1.

Izzak takes on next #10 Carson Kharchia of Ohio State in the "Blood Round" tonight. Winner guaranteed the coveted top 8 and All American Honors. Check it out on ESPN. GO HUSKIES

RE: NIU Wrestling
Olejnik just lost 7-3 to Hamati of Wisconsin, so he wrestles for 7th place tomorrow. Top eight are awarded All-America status, so he has clinched being an AA.

Twelfth All-America in NIU history (nine different wrestlers). Last was Britt Wilson in 2021.

Not sure what you are questioning. Olejnik won on the riding time point.

Prairiedawg, not sure if you wanted a recap of the match or didn't understand the finish of that match. The match finished 1-1. Both wrestlers scoring one escape each. The difference in the match is that Izzak had 1:01 in riding time. Meaning he rode the Ohio State opponent 1:01 more that he rode Izzak. If a wrestler has 1:00 or more riding time he is awarded an additional point at the end of the match. 2-1 Izzak won.

I used to cover college wrestling in my sportswriter days, but I can't recall all that detail.

Don't care. Great job by a Huskie!

Olejnik lost the 7th place match 6-2 to Caliendo from North Dakota State, but, forever, an All-America.

Thanks for the explanation, the riding time is what I needed help with.

Way to represent Izzak!

Everyone should just get used to it. Probably can get $10k in NIL by moving up to the P5. This is just a fact of life now. Any success at little old NIU can be parleyed into some extra cash. I used to think it traitorous, but now I feel everyone should just go get what they can. College sports will be dead to be in a few years since they will be semi professionals and not really students anymore. Just not my cup of tea.

I agree. College sports are the only sports I really follow, and this will probably be my last year for college sports. You're a fan of a team, and that team starts to show some great play from excellent players, maybe winning their conference and going to a nice bowl. Then, in the blink of an eye, those players leave for what they perceive is greener pastures. Well, good for them, but as a fan, this is just disheartening to see a team basically start over year after year (except for the top P5 teams). They can have it. We are now living through the death of college sports as we once knew it.

The smart coaches at the G5/mid/low-major levels will figure out how to work this system to their advantage.

Agreed. Some already have. I just do not feel any linkage to bunch of mercenaries just moving around from team to team each year. I just like the old days where you watch players develop and hopefully they gel and you get a good team that you can invest time in following. Just not a fan or NIL or Transfer Portal. Good for players go get what you can, but I will really dial down any following. I know it is a "get off my lawns kids attitude", but that is my right to feel that way about the direction college sports is headed.

RE: NIU Wrestling
I wonder how many kids enter the wrestling portal? There are roughly a quarter to a third of the programs compared to D 1 basketball.
How many Division 1 wrestling colleges are there? There are 78 Division 1 wresting programs across the country with 9.9 maximum scholarships per team, although some programs might have less.

RE: NIU Wrestling
So glad he gave us an all American accolade, that NIU's forever, but once he puts on another uniform, starts working towards his lifelong degree at another university, I wish him nothing but mediocrity on the mat from that point forward. I know some will say otherwise and wish him "all the best", but that's a losers' nicety to me. He has some talent for sure, but NIU certainly helped build him into what he is today (or thinks he is), and as of his portal announcement he is nothing more than the competition. F*ck off if you're bailing on the Huskies, and the NIU degree I have hanging in my office. :)

At another U. Then to NIU. Afterward, news, features, analytical writing, editing, mag writing. 'Nuff said.

Now back to the Huskies ... ?

Darn! I would have sworn that you were Ziggy Bobbin, the old sports reporter from the 1960's for The Polish Daily Zgoda. Oh well, I guess my intuitive prowess is not what it used to be.
