Zeke released by COWBOYS....Tony now #1 running back
Three hours ago Zeke released due to Cowboys requesting a pay cut in his contract. Tony gets $10 million a year deal. Tony moves up to #1 running back with COWBOYS. Tony was more productive than Zeke in 2022.

Heard that on a national sports network show. They called Pollard the explosive RB and most productive over the last two years.

Yep. Hope they draft a RB this year. It’s not a 1st round need but if BPA happens to be one, then get him.

I just hope Tony can return to form next year after that terrible injury.

Cowboys also traded for perennial all pro CB Stephon Gilmore to pair with Trevon Diggs and resigned Donovan Wilson and LVE who were the teams leading tacklers last year.

Word is they are in talks to acquire pro bowl WR Deandre Hopkins.

That's the key for sure.

Not as bad as a completely blown knee.

But going to have him behind on his conditioning.

And have to wonder about his mental state, when he feels he can completely trust the leg again and not be hesitant with cuts.

The next riveting chapter in the unlikely success story of Tony Pollard. What a great sequence of events!
Pollard gets PAID!

Now, don't be upset when the same thing happens to TP after his rookie contract. It's how the NFL RB market goes.

Loyalty-from the team to the player, but also vice versa-seems to be a thing of the past, at least in the NFL. At least Tony is getting the big money to play in that environment.

RB isn’t the valued position it once was, but TP has fewer miles on him than a normal RB coming off his rookie contract. TP getting franchise tag this season and will be eligible for it again in 2024 at 120%. If he has a productive 2023, I wouldn’t be surprised at all for them to tag him again and then be done.

Yes! And it's a great place to have a huge Social Media following. Doors open for media opportunities, coaching opportunities after his playing days. Hope he keeps as many doors open as possible. Being in the Dallas Cowboy spotlight and shining is HUGE!

The cowboys have shifted around a lot of money the last few days and opened up a ton of new cap space.

Most think a major trade or signing of an elite WR is coming.

Pollard cannot be cut... Well, he could be, but there is a 99.999% chance he won't be cut.
He is franchised which is a one year deal. His salary is 100% paid and on the salary cap number this year.

At the end of the year the cowboys can let him go to another team, sign him to a mutually agreed to longer term contract or franchise him again...no reason to cut Pollard

What I don't get...is that RBs don't seem to last as long as they used to.
Teams ran the ball in the past...and RBs had better longevity than they do now.
What changed?
Whats the difference in guys like Emmitt Smith and Bary Sanders...and guys like Zeke and Pollard? (besides the elite RB factor) I'm saying they are all people...what in the game has changed that makes RBs wear out faster now?

They had short careers back in the day as well, the difference now is teams are quicker to move on from them. Back in the day they would spend 3 years still on the team but no longer the primary RB.

Its often the salary cap that causes them to be cut or released faster. If not for his massive contract I suspect the cowboys would like to have kept Zeke around as a short yardage guy and power back for another year or two. It just not possible given his massive contract and the cap situation. And he has become more injury prone the last few years.

Its always been the exception to have RB's who are still good in their 30's. Even Eric Dickerson was washed up at 29. Marshall Faulk, Thurman Thomas, Corey Dillion, Ahman Green and Eddie George were all washed up at 30.

Emmitt was still good in his early 30's, but his team faded badly after 1996. Barry Sanders O line actually got better later in his career. Walter Payton's line and team got WAY better in his 30's as well.

More competent backs are available

Tony needs a compliment RB to extend his career & reduced injury potential, like Elliot was but cheaper. Several available in the league or draft. DeAngelo had that & it probably got him 2-3 yrs extension in the league.

DW had a helluva compliment in J Stewart. To have a combo like that is a rarity in today's NFL.

Curious to see what happens. They worked out OBJ - how'd that go? D.Hop?

I'm a Jags fan but follow closely to the Boys. I think they need to embrace the running game and stop putting everything on Dak. Dak's talent/capability is already maxxed out IMHO.
