Sonny Wilson Honors
Toledo Men's Basketball Signee Sonny Wilson was just named Michigan High School Gatorade Player of the Year. Hie scored 28 points in his last High School Game Monday night as his team lost in the Michigan State Tournament. Now its on to Toledo where he can be groomed and mentored by RayJ Dennis to take over the point guard duties full time in the 2024-25 season!

Really good player on tape, last time we had a Mr. Basketball from the state of Michigan it worked out pretty well (Rollins) . Seriously doubt he redshirts, bet he gets time with/splits time with RayJ/Moss/Dante in sharing the backcourt next season. I know plenty to be disappointed about this year, but much to be excited about going into next year.

Dennis only has one year of eligibility left, so the 2023-2024 season will be his last year

That part I get. What puts this new kid automatically into the PG spot as opposed to players already on roster? Moss who has been picking up more PG duties or Maddox?

Rollins wasn't Mr. Basketball. In fact, he wasn't even one of the five finalists.

The "new kid" much like rollins is likely college ready, and college ready to play the 1, where Maddox, Moss are more utility guards for our team and will play the 2/3 roles throughout the rest of their careers. Moss may have some time ball handling going forward, but Sonny is likely the shoe-in because of his natural fit at the position more than the other guys. We'll see how TK interprets it all though.

Nothing is a given and Wilson will have to earn the opportunity to Start at Point Guard after Dennis graduates after next season. With that said, Wilson has all the physical attributes to be the "point guard of the future" at Toledo. He also has the intangibles that separate the great ones from the good ones like being the following described by opposing coaches (fierce competitor, killer instincts, a lion, all about winning, etc. He has been compared to his high school predecessor, Casius Winston who had a All American career at Michigan St. Let's just say, the potential is there for Wilson be the next great point guard at Toledo following in the footsteps of Brown, Jackson, and Dennis!

RE: Sonny Wilson Honors
Wilson is the highest ranked high school signee of TK's career (thank Justin Ingram). He's a true pg. TK typically likes to carry 1 really good pg on the roster and surround him w versatile guards. So far, it's worked as all of his primary pg recruits Juice, Marreon, Dennis have panned out and none have had a serious injury. Wilson was signed to be the starting pg after Dennis leaves. period. Now, if his play is subpar they will recruit another guy. But, it's his job to win. We may sign another pg in a year or two but more likely as insurance or a player who can also play off the ball and shoot.
Michigan HS hoops has been down a bit last two years. No superstar HS kids in state this season or last. A few P6 recruits but none were as good in HS as Wilson. They are bigger and project higher in college which is why Wilson got mid major offers instead of big 10 ones. Wilson can play and competes. Said to have a big personality too which was one of the reasons the staff likes him. Thinks he can grow into the face of the program so to speak as his role increases. Will be a tough call whether to rs him next year. Dennis is gonna play 34-35 minutes a night and will have the ball in his hands. Probably depends on Wilson's defense. If he adapts quickly on that end and gives us a quick 6 foot defender who can spend some time in front of the sincere carry type small fast guards then he'll probably play.
Moss is a good player but not a true pg. He passes well and can hold his own dribbling the rock but he's a defender and role player who won't have the energy and focus to solely play pg. We were outscored in each of our last 4 games when Dennis was off the court.
Also, all this conversation neglects farmer who is really coming on. His ability to make plays on the boards and around the basket gives us an edge and his ceiling as a player is as high as any of the wings. If the jumper and decision making continue to improve watch out.

If I'm a guard that wants to concentrate on shooting or defense, this new player sounds like just the ticket. Still a learning curve against faster and quicker players. I'm not sure I'm hoping RayJ stays or hoping he gets a shot in the NBA. I see now, it would be REALLY nice to have him. Necessary? Eh, Purdue got by with a Fr PG ranked lower than the one K just got.

Still baffles me rollins wasn’t a finalist that year, but he had better college career than all 5 finalists. And on sonny Wilson he’s a true pg and tough as nails, also played for elite travel program “the family” same as rollins. Those players are always well coached and prepared for college so I’m always happy with getting players from there.

My apologies categorizing Rollins as Mr. Basketball, big time freudian slip there thinking of how good he was for us... But have a lot of confidence in Sonny, as Pono said in the thread, really highly rated and a true one. The decision to RS or not will be interesting, obviously the hype is there to want to see him get time right away but again as Pono said RayJ will be playing big minutes. TK talked at the end of the season this year that Javan Simmons was a RS because of the minutes JT and Setric were going to be playing, but in the same breath he mentioned Javan could've given us valuable minutes. I wonder if we'll see TK play Sonny because of the value he could bring, or RS him for the same reason Javan was RS.
