Fortunately, all you have to do is win the conference tournament and, finishing top 4 or 5 probably has a reasonable shot at winning the thing on any given year.

2023: #2 Kent State
2022: #4 Akron
2021: #5 Ohio
2019: #1 Buffalo
2018: #1 Buffalo
2017: #1 Akron
2016: #3 Buffalo
2015: #1 CMU
2014: #1 WMU
2013: #1 Akron

Hmmm...seems like the new format may make it harder for the top seed to win as the top 2 seeds used to get a bye into the semifinals and now they all have to win 3 games to win it. Actually, 2016 was the first year where the top seeds had to win 3 games and since then, over half of the winners have been non-#1 seeds . And since the most recent change (no campus play-ins) all 3 have been non-#1 seeds.

RE: Men's Hoops - State of the Program
I skimmed the portal list and found 3 players that NIU has shown interest in.
Chandler Turner 6’7” senior forward from Bowling Green. This would be a good get. He is a strong rebounder and would shore up a weakness.

Langston Wilson 6’9” senior forward from Washington. Bench player with spotty numbers but a ton of other schools interested.

Justin Wright 6’1” shooting guard from North Carolina Central out of the MEAC. Great shooter over 40% from 3.

For a conference-wide look, see Eagle66's "2023 MAC Men's Basketball Transfer Tracker" thread on the MAC bbs board.

I'm guessing that list basically comes from Verbal Commits because the other day I noticed the same thing about EJ Farmer. He's listed as tranferring from Toledo AND Western Michigan.

Unless he announced a transfer TO WMU and then almost immediately reneged and jumped ship again, I'm not certain what that's about. Either way, I also took notice of Payton Sparks transferring from Ball State for the 2nd year in a row. And...grabbing him would be a nice grab for Burno, not to mention a little payback for Tyler Cochran.

Burno needs to go after him hard. Right out of our backyard and would add some nice size to the team.
