"Really good shape" is definitely debatable. Yes, that was one of two above .500 records during his tenure but that 21-13 mark was achieved against one of NIU's historically weakest schedules and going 9-9 in the MAC led to a tie for third place in the West Division....the highest finish a Monty unit ever reached. His 43 percent career record (123-163) was a step above Patton's rock-bottom effort. If that is "really good shape" no wonder the program is where it is today.

They went 21-13 and like the entire team was freshmen and sophomores lol. It looked like they were finally heading in the right direction. Everybody transferred and it fell apart so it didn’t matter, but I’m not sure what you're debating.

Even that year was a joke. They beat FOUR non-D1 teams in Eureka, PU NW, Judson and one other plus another win vs Chicago State. 9-9 in league and were tossed in the first round by Ohio. Paid to go to Vegas and get beat by Cal Santa Barbara

But at least they did not lose to those 4 non-Div. 1 teams.

Now if we can only right the ship in baseball too.

Sorry, but there's a wide gulf between "biggest joke in all of college basketball" and NIU.

Hawaii, that's is some rich stuff!!

Can't figure out which is more astonishing....the fact that we broke OUR own record of five which we set earlier in the year...or...

Monty's quote of "at 18-4....if we make a couple shots.....we are back in it."

And nothing better than a pre-prison Petey Balls reference to start the morning.

According to Verbal Commits, Taku Youngblood and Armandas Plintauskas will enter the transfer portal.

I kinda thought Youngblood might. Kinda surprised about Plintauskas.

They'll both go JUCO and try to improve their stock...then they'll end up back at another mid to low-major in basically the same role they'd be in if they'd just stayed at NIU.

Either way, Burno has some offers out to some guards that I am more intrigued with than either of those two. Although, the more video I saw of Youngblood from HS the more I actually like him. But, I never was impressed with him on the floor for NIU.

BR, you brought up a good point. We tend to think that the Portal is evil and that players are not loyal and will leave for bigger NIL money.

But there is no doubt in my mind that coaches who see players they have recruited not fitting in thier program will encourage them to enter the Portal to free up scholarships. The portal is not onesided. I think it is used by both sides.

I suppose I unintentionally brought that up!

I didn't even think of it that way, tbh but yeah, there could be some counseling going on where a kid is falling behind on the depth chart and the best move for them is to reset and improve their stock at the JUCO level.

Man...I bet that's a tricky conversation. You could be an assh0le about it or you could be caring about it. And I bet there's a very fuzzy line that separates those two perspectives from the other side.

You unconsciously brought a talking point? That's talent!

I could see a coach being both being an angel and devil in the same meeting with the kid.

"Son, I love your attitude and desire but your skills are not there yet. I think if you enter the Portal and refine your skills for a year or 2 at a Juco, you have a chance for a P5 scholly. If you don't transfer, then you will never see PT and have to run 500 suicides at every practice!

With that said Bruno now has 4 open scholarships to fill with 8 guys on the roster and one commit already coming in.

The breakdown is:

G
Williams
Russell
Coit
Nutter

F
Zongo
Amos
Niederhäuser
Ibarguen

C
Durosinmi

Of the guys he's got offers to, I like one of the bigs, a guy named Jeriah Coleman (a 7 foot athletic center) and a guard named Quimari Peterson (a Coit-type who's more of a true PG). Both of which are JUCO players, although Coleman initially went to Saint Joseph's and Peterson initially went to Indiana State. If he brought in those two, he'd still have room for 2 more incoming freshman and there are some really interesting guys that he's offered.
