I wouldn't expect there to be all these exciting things to do right outside the door step of a convention center in a city like Birmingham. There are some legit gripes but some of this just seems like lazy helplessness.

every place I've ever been to the NCAA tournament is set up like I described. If that's what people are used to, you can't knock them for pointing out that Bhm falls way short of the experience in every other town (from major metropolis to mid level markets half the size of Bhm)

Birmingham folks are way too comfortable with how lazy the city is

Maybe there will be more bar options once the amphitheater is completed. Wonder what people will complain about then?

No seventies disco or country line dancing?

Didn't go to the tourney game in Philadelphia then. You want to know what's near that arena? A Baseball Stadium, a Football Stadium and acres and acres of parking lots.

Not even in the same league with Birmingham's offerings in close proximity.

Don't underestimate how lazy the average American whiner is.

I am not looking at it as a visiting fan. Of course people are lazy. PEOPLE ARE LAZY AND LIKE TO WHINE. Not a newsflash there.

I am looking at it as a business owner or city leader should be looking at it — which to aggressively maximize the opportunity when you have a big event at your venue. We choose lazy and like to whine at THAT level.

It’s the most Birmingham thing ever to not give fans what they’ve come to expect from other venues hosting the same exact event…then blame those fans for just being lazy…then wonder why said event doesn’t return any time soon

I was responding to someone on Twitter who said fans were disappointed by the lack of things to do later at night around the BJCC area. The city can’t erect bars and restaurants and hang out spots overnight - that’s where it’s on the individual visitors to do some research and find out where there’s stuff to do later at night.. I definitely hold the city responsible for not promoting and marketing the event, and not doing anything to make the atmosphere around the arena during the game times fun and inviting.

If you go to a random medium sized city and expect there to be streets and streets of late night hangouts immediately outside of a convention center, you are lazy, over 65 and have the font size on your phone set to “old head” size and couldn’t find the phone book, or you just like to complain.

I am shocked — SHOCKED! — at the lack of Grey Poupon and little umbrellas for my tiki drink. (sarcasm font off)

But seriously … Yes, I’m sure some things can be improved, but I just can’t get too worked up about everything not being within walking distance of the arena. If people don’t do even a minimal amount of research on Birmingham nightlife before coming, we’ll, that’s on them.

Yeah it is all on them. Still doesn’t mean it wasn’t a huge missed opportunity to not better cater to and market to the event and it’s visitors

I mean, there are people complaining that there's no acres of parking near the BJCC

Street festival and team pep rallies

Marketing directly to alumni bases of participating schools

Marketing directly to NIL collectives of participating schools. This is a big missed opportunity. Those collectives have money to spend and need to engage fans and donors, many of whom will be here in Birmingham for 1-3 days.

Working to have establishments be designated as pregame destinations and daytime watch party locations for other games. Get people to these business on the off day and before/after their team’s games

Special pricing and menu items aimed at participating fans.

Signage.

Geofencing and topic targeted social advertisements for uptown and other destinations

Lots of others

I’d rather leave the game I attended & Uber 5 mins to bars that are open until 2-3am in Bham than EVER have to leave a game and walk to a bar in Des Moines, Ia this time of year, Just sayin…..

The Convention and Visitor Bureau of Greater Birmingham could probably do a better job of informing visitors of the entertainment areas in and around Uptown. Maybe even provide special shuttle services to the entertainment districts near Uptown for these type of events and ensure the Sheraton, Westinghouse, and other nearby hotels have the entertainment districts information in their hotel brochures.

Some cities go so far as to have these "shuttle services" run all the time on a schedule on fixed routes for the benefit of the citizens and visitors alike. Silly to think of something like that for Birmingham, though

I know people who tried to attend the World Games events using the 'provided shuttles,' and they ended up giving up and driving down to still park two miles away. Heck, the UAB shuttles during football games are dang near worthless because of congestion around the stadium.

I don't have any answers, but if the city really wants to hots big events, somebody somewhere needs to be paid to make big plans and big impressions.

I went to TWG every day and utilized the Shuttle often. It worked wonderfully. The opening night was a bit slow due to the massive size of the crowd, but the rest of the time it was great! The shuttles from downtown to Legion Field during Magic City Classic run great. The probably should have had a few buses from Uptown to Lakeview/Five Points/2nd Ave for fans this weekend for March Madness. Missed opportunity there.
