He's made 10's of millions of dollars being a slightly above average bb coach - amazing.

then what did Tic Price do?

He destroyed the program. Then Cal built it up from the garbage that Tic and Johnny left. Then Pastner was handed the top 10 national program that Cal built and turned it back into garbage within 5-6 years. Then Penny started over again.

Johnny was handed a rotten banana.

Exactly what qualifies him to be the lead assistant? He went from video coordinator to Head Coach and skipped a bunch of steps....

The year we went to the tourney and before our game started they were interviewing him and he was talking about “his trips to the tourney as a video coordinator.” I’ve never been more embarrassed for Memphis basketball than in that moment.

We literally could have plucked names of local high school coaches out of a hat and found a more qualified person.

He’ll be the next Tony Robins. Can’t wait to see him speak at the local elks club

We took a chance on him when RC freaked out after a few said no and we were about to be under investigations - wasn’t the best move but ok.

But the massive renewal when he had done absolutely nothing was one of the dumbest things our admin has ever done. And it’s not like they haven’t done dumb things. Heads should have rolled after that.

He had some of our biggest boosters completely snowed. I was at a meeting when a certain one who owns a certain bank was very pissed that we let him walk.

Absolutely.

after Mike Anderson, Leonard Hamilton, and Scott Drew turned it down that's pretty much where we were.

You are correct about One of those three… Mike Anderson did say no very quickly.

Scott Drew was ready to go before Lapides and Geoff slandered him so badly that the University had to move on ..

I mean, the looming NCAA cloud meant we needed someone VERY clean...

NCAA cloud or not Anderson wasn't leaving a Big 12 school to coach at Memphis.

RE: NTR - Pastner Out at GT
I always liked Pastner and when he was the coach here he was MY coach. I knew we wouldn't ever go very far with him at the wheel but he was still a nice guy.

I think I've told this story before, but I talked to him briefly at a a "meet and great". Our town was hurting because of Calipari and he seemed like a breath of fresh air. We shook hands, I introduced myself, told him I was glad he stayed and he was rushed on to the next person. Very brief interaction for sure.

A few months later I was walking in to the service department at Bud Davis Cadillac and he was walking out another door. We were about 30'ish feet away from each other and I yelled out "HEY COACH!". He turned around, looked at me and said "HEY Will!" He remembered my name after 3 months and meeting thousands of people. I was quite impressed and had high hopes for him.

14 years later and it's obvious he isn't head coach material. But I sure hope that someone hires him for another position and he stays in basketball.

In the vast majority of cases - if they haven't won big within 3 years it's time to move on. Not EVERY time (que the Frank Beamer story) but it is for sure MOST of the time.

Mike Anderson only got 4 at St John’s and he’s 10 times the coach Pastner is

What cloud ? All we got was a banner taken down. That stuff is so overplayed. We coulda got way better than Pastner but hired the players buddy. Unfortunately we made the same mistake a decade later with football

Pretty much what I was saying. Regardless of anything that might have been coming our way OR NOT, Anderson wasn't ever going to leave a Big 12 gig to coach at Tiger High.

And yep, had they held out for someone who was a LOT more qualified someone would have come along. By a LOT more qualified I mean someone who had been a coach at just about any level at all.

Also, none of this is meant to disparage JP. He was set up to fail IMO. I've heard various first hand accounts that differ greatly regarding what kind of person he was but all I ever really cared about was what kind of coach he could be. I wish him no ill will and doubt that he will suffer greatly going forward considering the amount of money he was able to make as a HC.

Pastner = Silverfield
Silverfield = Pastner

They are both great recruiters (at least thats the claim), but neither can lead.

it's like Lee Fowlers coaching search at NC State. Once you've been turned down publicly by multiple coaches you're a toxic job and end up with Sid Lowe or Josh Pastner.

If you stated that back when he was coaching here, you would been run off the board. I pointed out that he wasn't a good coach while he was here and got flamed for it.

Got banned a few times for pointing out how bad of a coach he was and how dumb the stuff he did was. The Tarik Black forced apology is some of the cringiest.
Guy should never be in a position of authority.

not all coaches are made to be head-man material. Assistant coaches who recruit and/or break down film, do the Xs and Os for game-planning are needed as well.
There is no shame in that. I think he might take Cal up on his offer to join him at UK.
If he has a product to sell...he can recruit like nobodies business.

What really ran the program in the ground was after finally getting rid of a coach that was way under qualified, we hired a coach that was ready to sip martinis on a beach somewhere but needed one more big payday. That put the program on life support. In hindsight we should have just hired Coach Penny after Georgia Tech blessed us.
