UAB is hiring Alan Ricard as an analyst, a source tells
@on3sports
.

Ricard, a former Baltimore Ravens fullback, was Jackson State’s special teams coordinator the last three seasons. Played with new UAB head coach Trent Dilfer in Baltimore.

RE: Dilfer Staff
I'm hearing that the NCAA may do away with the "countable coaches" rule and approve analysts coaching on the field soon. If so, ours will be getting that on the field coaching experience they currently lack, and teaching what they know. I think that will be big for us if it does indeed happen. Of course, the big P5's will double the number of them that they have now...

Analysts currently are mostly assistants to assistant coaches. They often put together the videos that are used in meetings, including when the lead guy is trying to get a point across. That means that they have to understand what is being taught in order to do so. They're both learning and teaching.

This is a great hire. DL/FB and his mindset should help us. Tough hard nosed football player

Dilfer is going to have a number of guys on the staff who have a lot of credibility when they say "If you want to play at the next level, this is how you get there."

RE: Dilfer Staff
I love the fact that Dilfer is bringing in so many who have backgrounds as analysts at big programs. You don’t get onto those staffs without knowing your stuff and you don’t stick around without adding value. It is a tremendous way to really learn the game if you are a young coach, and a great way to get a refreshed perspective if you are a veteran coach (or former head coach even). I feel like they will be hungry and ready to grind on recruiting trail and prove themselves bigtime in their new roles. They are ready!

IMO Dilfer is going the young, highly motivated, relate to recruits route when it comes to his staff. He may be of the mindset that Jimmy's and Joe's > X's & O's. While I don't think the staff is incapable of X's/O's, they are just unproven at the college level. Not the direction I thought he would go... but hope it works.

They seem to have produced a pretty good class of recruits and transfers. I think they've done well, but the reality is that until these guys are fitted into place, coached up, and produce on the field, we won't really know what we have.

Certainly the naysayers won't change their opinion until the W column starts to fill up.

We now have a strong foundation in recruiting. Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia usually have the top classes. Get ready for UAB to start having the top classes in G-5!

This class is full of SEC/ACC transfers who are coming back home. This is so big for many reasons besides just the talent. This is also why we should be recruiting those kids hard in high school. We will eventually land a few of them from peeps but the more common play will be that they come back to us later. But just the idea that these local kids come home is validating for our program because they all had p5 options this go around.

RE: Dilfer Staff
How many of us knew people we graduated with, or kids who were friends of our own children, who went merrily off to UA or AU (or out of state where ever) as freshmen, only to bust out and come home? There is nothing unusual about students figuring out that they have a better support system at home, with friends and family around them.

This is just football players doing it, or simply changing their minds about their decision and trying a reset. Oh, and available playing time and not having some stud P5 guy in front of them probably helps too.

10 of my 12 buddies left Auburn and Alabama to come back to UAB after a year or 2 in college.

Twitter from Steve Irvine

UAB added Rip Scherer to football staff as Senior Advisor to Head Coach. Really good move. Scherer has been in coaching for nearly 50 years in college fb and NFL. Was head coach at James Madison and Memphis. His first NFL job was QB coach for Browns. His QB was Trent Dilfer.
