Of course with another Portal Window looming before next fall, Spring Practice has become much more important to players-both on current rosters and already in the Portal.

Can't really say Spring Practice is a tryout for next years team for a lot of players, but it is.

With the demise of the 25 rule, and another portal window looming, coaches have a lot of discretion as far as making late roster management decisions. Most will sit down with players after spring practice and let them know where they stand and many player will not like what they are hearing.

Using Arkansas as an example- because I can monitor what happens here, of what is expected to happen at a lot of schools , they have brought in some monster talent through the Portal, and while their coaches are saying it will be an even playing field, these players talent says otherwise and Portal additions are expected to contribute immediately.

Some current roster players will probably not like the upgraded competition that comes when a monster enters their room, and some talented but impatient players will likely hit the Portal.

Last time I looked their were around 500 P5 players still left in the Portal and that number is expected to increase considerably this May. Schools like A-State have made it clear they will make room for some of them.

A-State 3-Star RB Bobby Mcmillian has entered his name in to the Portal. As his video shows' he looked pretty good this spring but is behind four RB's that looked even better.

Good young athlete that was moved to TE this spring , and pt there was going to be hard to come by at least this year.

With the Portal closed since last Sunday, and A-State reportedly looking to add some more players in the "trenches" on both sides of the ball over the next month, was expecting a few players on the DL and/or the OL to show up as entering the Portal this week.

The only player reported on their 247 site as entering was WR/TE Marquis Harris who announced his commitment to Grambling and who I had as a PWO.

Of course players could have requested their entry not be made public and may not have told their coaches they are in the Portal.

If this is the case then they have faired pretty well this cycle.

Losing starters CB Kenneth Harris (Oklahoma State), All-SBC TE Seydou Traore (Colorado)-who is back in the Portal, OC Ethan Miner (North Texas)-who with the addition of Jacob Bayer was probably going to have to move to another position to start , and punter Ryan Hanson- who was probably going to be behind William Przystup in 2023, were their only notable loses.

All the other players that left were projected to be backups, and most were not expected to be major contributors in 2023.

Like most SBC teams they brought in more highly recruited players than they lost with OT Hamilton Hall (Ole Miss), OT Tobias Braun (Ole Miss), OG Jalen Cunningham (Ole Miss), C Jacob Bayer (Lamar),CB Donte Thompson (Incarnate Word), RB Zac Wallace (UT-Martin) , LB Gavin Potter (Kansas), QB J.T. Shrout (Tennessee/ Colorado) , DT Micah Bland North Alabama, CB Manny Stokes Jr (Coastal) , WR Cortney Jackson (Syracuse) and WR Corey Rucker (South Carolina) being strong candidates to be starters or the primary backups.

There is no doubt the Portal made them better.

"Sanders and Colorado have had more players enter the transfer portal in a year's span than any other program since the transfer portal was implemented in 2018, according to ESPN Stats & Information. The 71 players are 21 more than the next program, Arkansas State, which saw 50 players enter the portal during the 2021-22 cycle."

Of course the posters on their #1 Hate site intended it to be perceived as a negative but the fact is like most SBC schools, they have brought in much better talent than the lost in the Portal.

Hopefully this year it will began to show on the field, but no one knows if enough of their most talented players have bought into the "the process" Butch Jones uses to decide who plays. All we know for sure is being the most talented athlete at your position will not get you on the field.

Like the Portal DL Commit from Princeton he is a really good, physical football player, that should help their depth this year.

They have updated their roister and the only scholarship players missing that I still had on their roster are OL Darrell Harden , Navy Transfer OL Luke Coleman and WR Daverrick Jenkins. Both Harden and Jenkens were promising prospect, who showed P5 offers out of HS.

It does look like Butch has done a good job of keeping his returning roster intact since last fall, and shoring up some obvious weaknesses ,so while still young they should benefit from so many young players getting pt in 2022.

Again this is a good spot to post data for future reference because no one post here. Just wanted to track the roster since last year to see if the team being discussed on the various message boards during the off season is the team that really exist. For the most part it is but things could change over the summer.

I crunched the numbers on their current roster for all additions and A-State will have a higher rated roster on 247's 2023 College SBC Football Team Talent Composite than 2021 or 2022, and if not for the Portal would again have the best roster of talent in the SBC to cobble a depth chart out of.

The Portal makes predicting who will end up with the top roster in 2023 a little more difficult, because several SBC teams have had some outstanding success this go-around through the Portal, and are still adding talented players so will have to wait until September to see who has the highest rated roster.

They certainly have a good chance of finishing on top again, and while they will still be young overall, year three of the Butch Jones era should result in a much more competitive team , than year one and two.

Of course the real key to 2023 is if Butch Jones feels this team has adopted his culture. If not he has shown will not hesitate to throw them under the bus again.

Fans tend to think short term, but he has made it clear that he will not compromise long term goals for sustained success for the program for short term wins, and has his bosses backing.

It seems Butch likes what he is seeing, but has indicated that they still need to get tougher, and improve their mental discipline, especially when they are tired. It is a plus that he expects them to have 85 scholarship players for the first time, because they are talented.
