Finlandia University in the U.P., established in 1896 as The Suomi College and Theological Seminary, will close its doors after the conclusion of the current academic year. They were down to around 400 students.

"The school’s enrollment—and consequently its revenue—has suffered from a dwindling pool of local high school students and a lack of interest among those graduates for a college education, according to the Board’s letter. Facing “an unbearable debt load,” leadership chose not to enroll future students."

Is this just one of the first dominos to fall in this era of college enrollment decline? Will we continue to see schools like U-M and MSU throw their weight (and money) around to gobble up all the Michigan HS graduates? I know Finlandia seems unimportant, but they survived for 126 years and are now finding the current environment untenable. Could be the canary in the coal mine.

Too bad they aren't an HBCU. They could have their unsustainable administrative structure subsidized by the taxpayers until the end of time.
