Monday's March Musings
The Men's basketball season came in like a Lion and out like a Lamb as a local player Anthony Crump put the final nail in the coffin for the season. Since the 1998-1999 Season we have
Zero NCAA tournament appearances
Zero Mac Championship game appearances (only way into the tournament)
For coaches we have tried:
D2 X&O guy Jim? (Boone)
Local hero B1G ten assistant Charles Ramsey
Power 5 assistant with local ties and an identity Rob Murphy
Alumni with past success in MAC Stan Heath

Nothing has worked. Yesterday, BGSU fired their coach Michael Huger. While I think he could help our program I do not know if we have the money right now to pay two basketball coaches. Nor do I think we should this year's team was very young and very lean. Most players are out of transfers and frankly being on the #316 ranked team in the country I do not know if a lot of our players would have many options to stay at the 366 team Division 1 level of College Basketball so we claw and dig inch by inch upward.
Had Season Tickets this season, was a good experience and a nice night out. George Gervin Game Above Convocation Center has good sight lines. The arena seems to be an easy gym for opponents to shoot in, I do not have the answers but we need to try something new court design, new baskets, Water tower painted keys??
I probably will be back but I would like more of the Saturday at noon games instead of 2pm.
Fanbase I think if the team starts winning the lower bowl would be filled on weekend games, however 25 years of losing, and a small chance at the big dance every year leads to apathy.
Saw a Bald Eagle last week flying over Michigan Avenue over Belleville Road, thought it was a weird spot to see an Eaglet he Eagle maybe is a symbol of how lost our basketball program may be and how with grit, hard work and some luck anyone can survive anywhere.

RE: Monday's March Musings
I'll take one bite of the apple:

Game times are, in part, coordinated with WBB. Most schools I see opt to have the women's game first followed by the NCAA mandated 30 minutes for warm up and then the men's game. I think this is to have the crowd build for the 2nd half of the women's game. It would be depressing for WBB to have the arena empty out after the men's game. Truth be told, most folks don't want to sit through almost 5 hours of hoops, unless they are on the payroll for the doubleheader.

Should/would EMU consider having the men's game first? If so, what time, for Saturday games?

One thing I don't like, yes, I'm an early bird, but not an Eagle, is having the men's game delay on week nights because of the start time of the women's game. Start the women's game at 5:30 p.m. and then a 2 hours plus game and then 30 minutes and the men's game starts at 8 or say 8:15.

If the women's game goes first, start at 5 p.m. sharp.

One correction: Boone came from Robert Morris which is a D-I MBB school. Yes, we've tried a lot of things.

I still think Murphy's record needs to be put into context. Simply, decent coaches have .500 records until they have a bad season or two and they are gone.

What happened to Murphy is what typically happens to head coaches. You are hired to be fired. When is the big question. Only a minority of coaches can pull a Coach K, Jay Wright, etc. They are the EXCEPTION not the rule.

Steve Hawkins (WMU) had two bad seasons after a strong career and was gone (final MAC record: 158 - 154). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Hawkins
Michael Huger (BG) had two bad seasons and was gone (final MAC record 64 - 82). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Huger

Rob Murphy (EMU) had two bad seasons and was gone (final MAC record 79 - 93). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Murphy_(basketball)

Mark Montgomery (NIU) treaded water for years and then a bad season (2020/1) and he was gone. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Montg...asketball)

RE: Monday's March Musings
This Tweet (about the Wizards' game last night vs. the Bucks) highlights the fallacy of a lot of arm chair 'scouting'.

One comes up with a game plan to solve one problem only to get beaten by another. This problem goes back decades and decades: How to defend a team with a dominant big man? Try to double him and hope that their 3-ball isn't falling OR guard the 3-point line and get beaten inside?

This suggests that it is a no win situation. Coaches will get 'Monday morning' coached to death regardless of whichever strategy they employ. Best to pray the other team isn't hitting.

The greater Ypsilanti area gets a paragraph in today's Washington Post (Hint: nothing to do with MBB):

"In February 2022, Amazon, still racing to add capacity, planned to open two delivery stations in Michigan just 10 miles apart. One in Ypsilanti would displace 1,500 trees but create 577 jobs; the other in Pittsfield would bring hundreds of jobs for delivery drivers and hundreds more for workers inside the warehouse, according to Michigan Live. But the Pittsfield project has been delayed, and Amazon canceled the Ypsilanti project altogether."

The Amazon facility would have been across the street from the Ford plant on Textile, if I remember correctly. Sad it didn't come to life, but I can imagine it would have caused big changes to traffic in the area.

Feels very ironic given it was the nail in the coffin of a season in which our own local player (in this case hero) wasn’t able to help EMU’s season (not necessarily his fault).

Amazon just opened a new facility on MI Ave in Canton, barely outside of Ypsi.

I'm really disappointed that the Ypsi Township was discarded, it would have established a commercial foothold in an area that truly needs it. Carpenter Road in Pittsfield may have been suspended, but I suspect it will be revived with additional tax breaks.

Yes, I am an "arrogant Ann Arbor *******" but I spend a whole bunch of my leisure time east of US-23. The county needs to step in here and provide the same assistance that Pittsfield will. Just my opinion.

RE: Monday's March Musings
Going O/T to make a point. Trying to predict the next successful collegiate MBB HC is like trying to predict a Rhodes Scholar in junior high school. More art and luck than skill.

A case study of success: One of the March Madness Cinderellas appears to be Howard University. A school with a dismal MBB history.

Anyway, in May 2019 after apparently being turned down by bigger name coaches, HU hired an ASSISTANT COACH from Columbia. Not Duke. Not MSU. Not Maryland or Michigan but an ivy league school and not even Tommy Amaker's Harvard team.

His first year HU won ONE conference game. 2020/21 season cut short by Covid.

In his 4th year Blakeney, MEAC COY, has this team roaring. Beat their first round opponent 91 - 55. Graduating seniors combined for LESS THAN 10 points. All the while the storied Georgetown program, under Patrick Ewing, is downright terrible. I don't know how AD Lee Reed, fmr. of EMU, keeps him (maybe Georgetown doesn't have a fan forum. Lol).

How did he do it: Mostly by get Ivy league transfers BUT more importantly mined the fertile grounds of DMV, including his h.s. alma mater, DeMatha Catholic, a powerhouse. His key player is Elijah Hawkins a 5' 8" (I think) PG who can do it all. The straw that stirs the drink. Then an impact frosh PF from Bronny James school in L.A. And a few more players from the D.C. area including DeMatha.

In a sense, reminds me a little of Chris Creighton. Not the high profile candidate but built the program and the program is the joy of the school's athletic program.

I'm musing about lack of MBB success during 2022/23 across MI D-I schools. NOT ONE has had a good season. All under achieved, even if one or two go to the Big Dance.

Happy at least to hear some news about the parking structure, it's been a mess the last few years. They shut down most floors and did construction on it for all of the 2021-2022 school year, and then when it seemed construction was complete, they shut it down entirely in late September of the current school year.

The closure of the parking structure has put a strain on available parking. I helped with orientation today and some advisors were recommending commuters get to campus 30-40 minutes early so they can find a nearby parking spot. The only lot you're guaranteed to find a spot in is the north lot by the student center, and that can be a 15-20 minute walk depending on where your class is. Unless you get to campus before 9 am, you're unlikely to find a spot close to class.

All this comes as the price of a parking pass has increased to nearly $200 a semester. Ask any current commuter and they'll tell you that Park EMU is one of the worst things about the student experience. A nice article from the Echo covered it last November.

Bobby-Mo was D-II when Boone was hired by Diles (????) who said he hired him because he like his book. -- Totally blew up the program.

Refused to recruit Detroit until his buns were in the fire late in his tenure, and even then the ones he got had many ???-marks. If not mistaken, only one Detroit recruit under Boone played four years at EMU, and I can't remember his name.

Or until another tackle is injured. Congrats to Andrew Wylie, multi-millionaire.
