RE: I hate the airport conferences concept!!!
Orlando doesn’t have that problem. Almost everyone stays and takes a day for the kids at the theme parks. 07-coffee3

When I travel, in the beginning of the season, I’ll try to take in the town. Once it gets cold, I’m trying to get home ASAP.

Okay, getting off my soapbox now.

Where is the evidence to support this? Why does it matter if someone drives or flies to another city to go to a football game? It's probably easier to just drive home right after a game and more common to fly home the following morning. Why would any of this even register in your head let alone bother you so much that you "hate" it.

Why people care what others do if it isn’t harming anyone is beyond me. Maybe I don’t have time to do anything other than go to the game. Maybe I’ve been there a hundred times and have seen everything there is to see. Maybe I’m not interested in what a certain place has to offer. Maybe the cost of transportation, tickets, and lodging is all I can afford.

Because of this post I am quoting below:

(03-04-2023 10:58 AM)Once a Knight... Wrote:  Getting back to the original question I think on an island Washington St and Oregon St are viewed more like MWC members and fit that profile in a way. Their value lies being tied to UW and UO, but the assumption is that those two end up in the B1G whether it's directly from the PAC or after a number of years in the B12. If the B12 goes to 20 now by adding the 4 corners plus the Pacific Northwest 4, and then UW and UO go to the B1G the B12 is effectively "stuck" with two very far flung members with little if any upside with small fan bases in relatively smaller population states (especially in the case of Oregon which is more similar to Oklahoma in population but without the rabidness and following of football). In short there are other more valuable members elsewhere beit ACC fallouts or Top G5s with far more upside. The 4 Corners seem more cohesive and as others have said fit well with BYU and the old Big 8 (in the case of Colorado). Geographically AZ, ASU, Utah, and Colorado are closer to the Texas and plains schools. Oregon St and Washington St are considerably farther away from the already spread out footprint of the nB12.

And I hate the concept of conferences having pods. So I guess we're even?

Well you do have Hawaii and San Diego...

I’d rather go to the smaller college cities/towns not listed than many of the cities above (most of which I’ve been to at some point). But that’s just me.

You've been to one Champaign or State College, you've been to them all. What can you find in Bloomington or West Lafayette or East Lansing that's much different?

I was just stating my personal opinion. My experiences in larger cities in recent years have not been great, on average. Specifically NYC, Chicago, D.C., Las Vegas, St. Louis, Atlanta, New Orleans and Miami/Ft. Lauderdale - all of which I've visited in recent years. Some worse than others (again, my experiences). One could argue its because I'm not getting any younger and place more value on my safety/security than I used to. The other other possibility is some of these places are actually less safe/hospitable than they used to be. I much prefer medium and small towns these days...or just finding outdoorsy places to go.

Your wife will spend a lot less money if you go to a football game.

For college football, you're right. For NFL games, you have stuff to do on Saturday.

NFL games are held in big cities (Green Bay excluded).

Yeah, except you put those big, NFL cities of Atlanta, Denver, and Dallas in the "debatable" category.

And you put Nashville in the top category. Don't get me wrong, I love Nashville, and there's plenty to see and do. But if Nashville is in the top category, I'm failing to see how 3 cities with way more things to see and do aren't.

Sightseeing is a major part of the decision on which away games I attend. Also factors in greatly when the wife also travels. I always try to visit the school's campus and piggyback sightseeing before or after. BYU has had some great away-game road trips.

Allow me to add some more:

UGA- campus is a must see by itself. Rome, GA is nearby, and has beautiful mountains. Stone Mountain is also nearby. Varsity is a can't miss.

Auburn- great golf course, and Columbus, GA is nearby with lots to see and do. Did I mention that they have a hockey team???

Alabama- Bear Bryant Museum and Dreamland BBQ I have heard is awesome. Historical sites over there also.

Troy- campus has the Chinese terra cotta soldiers!!! Great golf course to the south in Dothan (Highland Oaks) and a good zoo to the north (Montgomery Zoo). Montgomery also has the Biscuits, a minor league baseball team.

Samford- just all around beautiful campus!! Birmingham has lots of stuff too.
