I do live in the Midwest now but I would be considered a fan from the east. And yes this is from a fan perspective. To me its like if we filled up our FB schedules with FCS teams of a particular conference for an alliance. Its obvious I won't be watching any of those WAC games and many won't. I just can't see the entertainment value playing against a for-profit school in BB.

GCU bought back their nonprofit status. They are extremely similar to Liberty.

The US Department of Education doesn’t know they aren’t for-profit anymore. They also tried to get that decision overturned in Dec 2022 and a federal judge denied it. They are for sure a for-profit still. So how are they like LU? And if you say a large online program then lots of P5 schools are like LU.

I don’t see any entertainment value in playing your bible thumping diploma mill, nor would I like to at all, but I can see the athletic value it brings.

Acting like NET ratings don’t matter is ignorant. This isn’t about the fans, half of us don’t have any. It isn’t about “entertainment value”. It’s about getting two D1 games that otherwise, at least in SH’s case, would be home games against NAIA schools. Having “good teams” and being respected nationally and getting at large bids goes hand in hand with NET ratings.

Your football scheduling comparison is dumb. The WAC is close to, or on par with CUSA in hoops. It’s a solid mid-major league, better than the Sun Belt, MAC or ASUN. We’re playing teams of similar stature from a similar conference. And it’s two games.

I’m not sure how you can’t see a few positives that come out of this for CUSA, even if it doesn’t really benefit Liberty much.

Salty…..yeah I don’t care about net rankings. A team just needs to win that’s how things move forward. If you don’t want your school in CUSA to play LU then let your administration know you want to leave the conference. Not CUSA’s loss if it happens. I don’t want you guys to go but if you are going to pretend SHSU has clout then you are sniffing gas fumes or something….LOL.

Regardless whether you care about NET rankings or not, they do matter. Just ask Coach McKay if he had rather play a WAC school or a school like Regent University. He’s voiced his displeasure about not being able to schedule meaningful games for years. Beating up on schools like Virginia- Lynchburg 101-49 is of no benefit whatsoever.

Nobody is pretending SHSU has clout. It seems like you think Liberty has some, or enough to complain about playing WAC schools. Commenting as if your “school” isn’t on par with the Grand Canyons and Seattles of the world. You should expect to play some schools you’ve never heard of, you’re Liberty.

Believe me, I’ve made my feelings known on the conference move but it is what it is. We had an online u in our last conference, we’ll stick it out here until someone else calls.

Yeah, but don’t listen to the coach who has led your school to NCAA tournament wins. Don’t listen to your AD. Don’t listen to the commissioner. Don’t listen to the selection committee. Ol Curtis 83 says those numbers are meaningless. Bring on the local Jr. High team, a win is a win!

Ummm yeah it’s pretty meaningless when the only team that goes to the tourney is usually just the autobid. I am not saying let’s not play good teams I am saying I’d prefer them to play good teams that aren’t WAC. And if we can get to the tourney without this obsession over NET ranking in the past I think in the future it will be the same. You know almost every WAC member is completely unknown on the eastern’ish side of the country. I’d rather not play the WAC but just occasionally to rarely.

I think we’ll be fine doing just that. Regardless, I’m glad CUSA is being proactive in getting quality D1 matchups for our schools to help fill out basketball schedules. I don’t know about you, but I’d like to see CUSA win an at large bid or two in upcoming tourneys. Playing Carver College and Regent and UMES does nothing to help our conference, in fact it holds us back. If you don’t agree with the conference making this move, I’m not sure you can claim to care about the health of our league.

Yeah man, my school will be playing “unknown” schools all year, in every sport. Playing a few WAC basketball members (just TWO) for the GOOD of the new conference isn’t such a big deal to put up a stink about.

Liberty played Delaware St, Bryant, Oral Roberts, Bellarmine, Grambling St, Lipscomb, Maryland-Eastern Shore and three I non-DI schools this past year.

I hope you aren’t trying to insinuate that fans would rather have the schools listed above and their collective NET killer than what this scheduling alliance will bring.

I think his point here is--from a fan perception-- this is NOT interesting for most fans in the EAST.

Interesting, I wasn’t familiar with the department of education fighting them. They are still more similar to Liberty than any other school in CUSA is. Just understand I’m saying this as a person that has a degree that says Liberty University on it (also a former football season ticket holder).

RE: WAC, Conference USA Scheduling Alliance in Baskeball
At the end of the day NET matters. At a minimum, if we stay a one big league, it helps us get a higher seed in the tournament. Those higher seeds have a much better chance at advancing which allows us the opportunity to gain more NCAA credits which equals more revenue. It also helps with our dream of becoming a multi bid league. Low NET teams are not getting an at large bid. While I can acknowledge those facts, it still isn’t the most attractive conference to do an alliance with for the eastern teams. Regardless I think it’s a good move for the conference.

Right there. In that sentence.

You just explained why we need to make these scheduling alliances and build up the conference's NET ranking.

Conferences with higher NET rankings don't have to settle for a single bid.

I think this agreement with the WAC is great….. if it keeps Liberty from scheduling the DII, DIII, and NAIA games we have in the passed. And if it is merit based scheduling that will help more. There are a few WAC teams I wouldn’t mind playing….. Abilene Christian, Cal Baptist, Grand Canyon, Seattle, S F Austin. All in all this is a great deal amd saves a few scheduling headaches.

Maybe in the future, as we improve our public and competitive perception as a conference, we can get into deals with other conferences like AAC, SBC, A10, or MW.

Scheduling three non-DI teams is a JOKE and is the coach, athletic dept., or schools FAULT.

One? Maybbee.

You have to spend money to bring in teams OR not be afraid to go on the road more than you'd like OR get in more MTE's.

Maybe you have to do a H-H with a team you consider a "little" weak. No-- NOT SWAC or MEAC teams (TOO Weak). Do an occasional H-H with schools from the Big South, Southland, OVC, or ASUN.

Example-- Liberty (IMO) ought to occasionally be doing a H-H with Radford or VMI---- just once in a while. JMU?

note-- ODU just scheduled a H-H with Radford.

Coaches are just trying to save their job with cupcakes. Some athletic departments don't have Or want to spend the money.

It Can be done (avoiding too many non DI's)--- NOT EASY-- but is possible.

***Next year with KSU--hopefully we have eighteen conference games and that will help individual teams' scheduling.

With 18 games and the scheduling alliance still in place (Total of 20)--teams will have NO excuse to play non-DI opponents.

NMSU will always play one non-D1 schools from the State of New Mexico each season. It's mandated by the State Legislature to play a home game against one of the smaller New Mexico schools or pay not to play them. The rest of the Non-D1 games have been a coach's decision.

Non-D1 games at NMSU the last 5 seasons...
2018-19 - Eastern New Mexico (92-65 W), Texas A&M International (80-42 W)
2019-20 - Western New Mexico (92-46 W), Northern New Mexico (104-30 W)
2020-21 (COVID year) - Arizona Christian (83-77 W), Benedictine Mesa (92-54 W), Western New Mexico (70-41 W)
2021-22 - New Mexico Highland (94-67 W), Northern New Mexico (93-60 W), Texas Permian Basin (84-59 W)
2022-23 - New Mexico Highland (101-52 W), Simon Fraser (77-35 W), Northern New Mexico (95-53 W)

SHSU has played 11 sub-D1 schools over the past three seasons. Yes, ELEVEN. Granted, that was all under former head coach Jason Hooten, who has thankfully moved on now.
