Football Home P5 Games - ACC
Found an interesting little nugget in an article about the ACC, revenue, realignment, etc. It's in the context of the commissioner trying to get the schools to be more serious about football. The part that jumped out:
"When Phillips took over in 2021, one of his primary objectives was to convince member schools to prioritize football and commit more resources to the sport. In the past year, for example, Phillips has urged schools to stop scheduling road games against Group of Five foes in order to save money. In 2022, the ACC played 10 such games, including three losses that damaged the league's image, while the rest of the Power 5 combined played just 12."
We might ***NOT*** be seeing an ACC team coming to Protective... (Left out an important word...)

The quote you gave and then the commentary you provided immediately after are diametrically in conflict. Or did I misread the quote?
It sounds like we will NOT be seeing an ACC team coming to Protective based on the quote.

I should proofread better. You're right, meant to say we might NOT be seeing them. That little three letter word was important.

It's not like they were coming here in the first place though.

This was first brought to light a few months ago. At that time the reaction from the acc members was the schools will to do as they pleased in regards to scheduling.

They are all going to move away from scheduling g5 H&H because it is their intention to break off P5 football entirely from the NCAA and possibly from the schools themselves if necessary.

It wouldn’t work that way — the ACC would raid the American and or Big 12 depending on how things unfold.

Raid the AAC sure, but not the Big 12. Big 12 would be more of a power than ACC. Without FSU and Clemson, the ACC would just be the BCS era Big East with UNC and Duke.

No there is a scenario plausible in which the big ten and sec pluck the big 12 and then the big 12 and ACC leftovers get together. That would happen before a raid of the American by the ACC.

Ah gotcha. Unfortunately yes I could see that happen once all the conferences cannibalize each other. Although, it looks like Big 12 have been in contact with Arizona, ASU, Colorado, and Utah.

Re the ACC, the grant of rights is the big obstacle, as ever. Look at what it took for UT and OU to move, and that Fox was made whole during that process. FSU and Clemson don't have lawyers that much better than theirs.

That may happen. Wouldn’t impact future ACC/B12 collab. On the back half of the GOR, when FSU, Clemson, etc. find it more economical to bolt and pay off than stay and be revenue deficit to their SEC rivals, you would see a western wing and an eastern wing of leftovers from B12/Pac/ACC. In that scenario it would also involve top of AAC and MW, potentially, but they would try to avoid it. I would see UCF, WVU and Cincinnati sliding east.

I heard what I think was the FSU AD talking in an open forum the other day. He was very vocal about what them and Clemson brought to the ACC and what could be done moving forward. I believe the numbers a lawyer quoted in this forum was $120M to break free from the ACC and they basically could make that back over 3 years by being in the SEC or Big Ten.
