Kent State vs. Akron
One of the best rivalries in mid major college basketball continues this Friday as Kent State welcomes The University of Akron Zips to the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. From what I can tell the winner of this ballgame is guaranteed to finish no lower than 2nd in the MAC with KSU holding out hope of stealing the #1 seed. But more than that, bragging rights (at least for a week) are on the line.

The Golden Flashes enter the game at 24-6 and 14-3 in the Mid American Conference. A Kent State win would lock up the #2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament, A Kent State win combined with a Toledo loss would give the Flashes the crown.

The Akron Zips are in a similar situation with their 21-9, 13-4 mark. The Zips would take the #2 seed with a win but can finish no lower than #3. But again, the bragging rights are there for the taking as this would be Akron's third straight win over KSU.

Not having Santiago is going to make this one tough as Akron is led by a pretty darn good point guard. Senior Xavier Castaneda leads the MAC in scoring at 21.4 points per game. He scored 24 points in the game at Akron and had a big shooting night, hitting five three pointers. Truth is, he is fun to watch. It would be more fun, though, if the Flashes get after him from the jump WITHOUT FOULING.

The next problem child for KSU is Enrique Freeman. The 6'7 junior averages about 16 and 11 per game and he torched the Flashes for 19 points and 17 rebounds the last time out. As a team, Kent State only had 28 rebounds that night.

I am sure Akron has some other formidable weapons on this year's squad. But slow down those two, value possessions and STAY OUT OF FOUL TROUBLE and I like the Flashes. I know, I know, that is a pretty deep dive into analytics.

Lets assume Kent State wins the ball game (and they will). It would appear that Buffalo or NIU would be the draw assuming Toledo takes care of Ball State. Should Toledo fall, the Flashes will be looking at.....one of three teams I believe? Anyway, BEAT AKRON!

Kent State 78
Akron 73
Sincere Carry gives the home crowd plenty to cheer about on senior night!

Rebounding was out issue last night. We cannot give that many second shots.

RE: Kent State vs. Akron
If you look at the team stats in just conference games, it's amazing how close the teams are, statistically speaking. For example, Akron is averaging only .4 points per game more, is giving up only .1 points per game less. KSU's shooting percentage from the floor is only .1% better, and opponent's shooting percentage favors KSU by only 1.5%. Akron's rebounding margin exceeds KSU's rebounding margin by only 1 rebound per game. The same thin difference holds true for most other stats, too. If I were forced to predict I would go for KSU only because of the home court advantage. On a neutral court, who knows?

Let's not forget KSU has won 21 straight at home. I do believe it will be 22. Then we will have to beat them again the following Friday night.

That's the thing about this game, the glory and/or the pain doesn't last long.

Coach Sendy ought to take all their phones Friday morning and give them back in a week.

It was young, dumb and stupid, and ending up costing us. But be an accessory to a murder and don’t miss a minute on the court. 05-nono

Yeah, given some of the s**t we've seen in college athletics this year, what happened last year with Kent was ridiculously minor. I don't think we ever found out where the suspensions came from, but I thought it was overblown. If it was Senderoff's decision, I'm good with it because I trust Senderoff, but, if it came from elsewhere to save face, I don't like it.

RE: Kent State vs. Akron
If any player on my TEAM pulled that BS they would be sitting for more than a half. I hate to talk about last year’s MAC Championship game, it’s a huge black eye. But if I can make even a small number of folks aware that there are still people out here who think that sort of behavior is the dumbing down of society in a nutshell…. I’ll go there.

It was idiotic, it was in poor taste and it was NOT what NCAA sports, or any sport is all about. It was NOT harmless and it was NOT okay. It was garbage.

Go Flashes!
Have fun, compete and let the chips fall where they may!

Agree, Bopol. In the greater scheme of things it was fairly minor. But still the players should have known better.

I'm glad you have standards though I disagree with you. Society could stand to be more polite.

Agree 100%. It was hardly “minor”. The Akron fans at JAR last season were way out of line and Carry and Jacobs response at the end of the game was also way out line (can’t believe they didn’t get suspended over that). These fans and players behaved like classless idiots. Hopefully they’ve all wised up this year…

The only video I could find of 2008 is pretty bootleg. But man I remember that ending well. It was a tidal wave of a comeback by Akron followed by an ICE COLD shot by Al Fisher.

The Brewer step through was pretty impressive as well. But more recently the clinic that Jimmy Hall and Walker put on them in the 2017 (I think) title game was tremendous.

Fishers dagger was awesome! Think Nick Dials was in tears. Couldn’t stand that smug b*stard

So the ticketing site still seems to be down. I wonder what tomorrow will be like. Will the upper deck be packed and the lower bowl not full because they had to stop selling lower bowl seats? Also, are they taking any steps to assure that the admission process is secure? I won't say the details of how it worked, but it wouldn't be very hard to sneak in on someone else's tickets with how they were doing it on Tuesday. Would really hate to see a situation where Akron students scam their way into prime seats for free... And would absolutely not put it past them to try. They've pulled sh!t before. I remember once years ago they got a large block of tickets in the student section, a free Tshirt, and a free bus ride by somehow getting the tickets set aside for a satellite campus.

I expect chaos tomorrow. I have GA and that should be pretty easy to handle (fortunately, I printed out my ticket), but if you haven't printed it out AND you have a reserved seat, it will be a mess.

That was a terrific job by those Akron kids. I remember it well. They kept their KSU shirts on right up until the starting lineups (or maybe a bit before). It was clean, fun and classic.
