A smart contract helps both sides. CofC accepting he will be gone are smart to make sure the buyout is a number theyre happy with. Getting something in play early is important to try and wade of middling schools and just leave it to the bigger boys to poach. But yes 1M buyout is nothing and tells me he is all but gone. I hope he sticks around though

In defense of them, it might mean that - like Shaka Smart - he will stick around longer than would otherwise be the case. After VCU's Final Four run they paid him a lot more and he stuck around .
Kelsey is in a great situation, so the extra $$ mean that he can stick around and wait for an offer that gives him even bigger $$$$ and where he doesn't start out behind the eight ball. Kevin Keatts left for a lot of money, but he was going into a situation with donors and fans who had very high expectations and he needed to out-recruit the UNC-Ch's, Dukes , etc.

I completely get what you are saying, but that's not what they are saying. They are saying that he won't leave period now.

However that annual salary is higher than the best of the CAA of the past. So that tells me they are angling not just for kelsey to stay but show they are the next A10 addition.

RE: Pat Kelsey
CofC fans were spoiled when John Kresse stayed there for decades. He left briefly in 1981 and accepted the job at Davidson, but returned after a week. He made CofC into a lower level power and coached them when they moved to Division I and continued winning.
He retired around age 58. He wanted to watch his twin sons play college basketball.

Speaking of Kelsey, his name comes up in connection with the Georgetown job - as does Kevin Keatts and Takayo Siddle:
"TAKAYO SIDDLE: Siddle—to me—should be more of a darling than May (or Pat Kelsey). He’s younger and he inherited a very bad UNCW team. The turnaround didn’t take long. He’s likely many years away from a jump to the likes of a Georgetown but he’s well on his way to building UNCW back in the same fashion that Kevin Keatts did in 2017"

Why would KK leave a State team he's built to be decent for a crappy school in a lesser conference?

If I recall correctly, the Georgetown job came open 1-2 weeks after Keatts accepted the job at NCST, and I felt at the time that Georgetown was a better fit for him. I really wish that he'd waited for that opportunity back then.
I don't think he'd make the move now, but I don't think it's a crazy idea either. He was on the hot seat coming into this season and caught lightening in bottle this year. He's gotten unexpected GREAT guard play, but Joiner graduates and Smith is gone to the NBA. I haven't paid close attention, but it seems like he stumbled into a back to the basket big in Burns. Unfortunately, for him, Burns also graduates. So, you go from the hot seat to unexpected success in a season, but the three biggest cogs in the wheel are leaving (and Duke and Carolina aren't going to be mid to bad basketball teams most years). Keatts doesn't lack for confidence and he deserves credit this year, but he wouldn't be the first guy to leave before the seat gets hotter.

Burns is only a Jr. and they have a pretty good class next year coming in. Georgetown when he took the State job was a much much better job than it is now, it's a dumpster fire now. The opposite could be said for State, with Roy and K gone the opportunity is there to make the next step. Especially after Carolina has shown that last year was a fluke and likely not the norm under Hubie.

Eligibility after Covid is stupid. Burns RS at Tenn, then played three seasons at Withrop and now has two years eligibility at State. Good for him and good for NCST, but it doesn't make any sense to me. He is in the same class as Zion, and Zion's rookie deal expires before Burns' collegiate eligibility.
Again, I don't think Keatts is going anywhere. Nor should he, but I'm not sure the portion of the fanbase that was down on him entering this season will be sold after this year. He's 12-8 in a down year for the ACC. Is that good enough? It seems like he's brought in good recruiting classes every year, but they never materialize. If you're NCST, do you want to count on Carolina and Duke being average, and then is going 2-2 against your biggest rivals when they're down and you're having your best season good enough? There is reason to be optimistic after this season, but no reason to be sold.
As it relates to UNCW, I love seeing Joel on the sideline. If Keatts can maintain success, it's good for us as long as the connection remains. If Siddle has significant success the next 2-3 years and leaves, Ponder probably would be the preferred choice, but Joel is a great second option.

No way on earth it's Ponder that I can see. Just not enough experience to take over the HC job. Justus has at least had several assistant jobs at prominent schools if we want someone with UNCW connections.

Genuinely asking, does Ponder have less experience than Siddle did before he went with Keatts to NCST?
I really didn't put a lot of thought into including his name. Just thinking of continuity, but I don't have any insight to the roles/capabilities of the current assistants.
