The Least Compelling Sun Belt Football Games of 2023
Everybody has a bad game. Except Troy, for some reason.

Alcorn at least brings a good crowd to Hattiesburg

If you’re going to schedule an FCS doing in opening weekend. Labor Day in Boone against anyone is a fun weekend.

To be fair our game is a last second fill in. I'm pretty sure it helped out someone in our conference.

We did nearly lose to Gardner Webb this past season. We have ZERO room to look past anyone. I hope the new staff understands that.

We always start the year with one warmup patsy. Bucknell is an upgrade over Moorehead St. Scoreboard might be similar: 68-10 vs Moorehead

The opener for us is about tailgating, checking out new players, and seeing the younger redshirt guys who never play otherwise.

FWIW : App's opponent Gardner-Webb is better than Troy's opponent SFA. The entire conference has a patsy game.

Haha, my first hot take was Jacksonville State's going to put us on the ropes with that early game at home! The Gamecocks had a scrappy FCS squad and are not going to be intimidated at all. Duquesne defeated Ohio in 2021 for its first win over an FBS squad so hopefully the Dukes got that out of their system and we send them back to Pittsburgh with a beat down...04-cheers

Bucknell Bison: Winner of the 1st Orange Bowl (over Miami). Sure, it was 88 yrs ago, but they do have a trophy.

Southern Miss has a long history of bringing in in-state HBCUs. Alcorn and Jackson State have brought in some of our largest crowds in history. The bands bring excitement to the game. The tailgating is great.

If you are going to play an FCS team, it may as well be in-state and add all of the things listed above.

SWAC bands are very entertaining. Southern U and Grambling are great to host for their bands.

I completely agree. I don't expect either to roll over. We should be okay as long as we come to play. We'll have better depth than both. Hopefully we've learned from this past season.

Maybe Lamar isn't the sexiest opponent, but we open with Army at home. That's a sexy enough game to cover for Lamar the following week.

Gardner-Webb has been quite good against FBS competition of late. Not sure how they get there, being in the literal middle of nothing in NC (it's worse than Boone because they are out of the mountains and the coast...just a dead area).

I vote for ODU’s entire schedule, except for the JMU game, because playing JMU makes it awesome.

The atmosphere will be electric - it's our first game of the year and on a nice holiday weekend. I'm okay with a tune-up game however, I wish it were an FBS team.

Never been to a game there. I'm sad that we won't be going there anytime soon. Seems like a great venue.
