RE: WBB vs. UAB
We only suited up 10 players. Fisher sprained her ankle 5 minutes into the UTSA game, but she looks fine. In fact, during halftime warm-ups, she was retrieving balls for the other players shooting and a couple of balls got jammed up in the net. She jumped up with her good ankle and knocked the balls loose. I'm no doctor, but I suspect she'll be ready to play Saturday for Charlotte (and we do need her). Gooden is out for a bit. The others are ones who have been hurt all season (Maya), have retired from basketball (Stover), don't play much (Adams) and then the walk-on guard from California has her foot in a boot now.
We definitely need a better 40-minute effort Saturday on Senior Day.

I heard that Fisher is having migraines. What's the story with Gooden?

Good thing we have enough players this season to be "okay".

Think goodness we leaving Conf USA. The officiating was terrible- so inconsistent. They didn't know if they should call ticky tacky fouls or just let them maul each other and play on. I thought UAB was more athletic then us but the three pt shot saved us. I didnt understand why Edmons didn't set up some plays for Crosthwait(double screen) since she was shooting so good the 3s.

Precisely what I said. Despite our offensive woes in the 4Q, with all the turnovers trying to get the ball into the post, Crosthwait didn't take a single shot (though she was 5-7 from the field and 3-4 from deep going into the 4Q).

I'm sorry to tell you, the officiating won't be better in the American. It's bad pretty much throughout all of college basketball.

RE: WBB vs. UAB
FYI, in what seems like a surprising twist, Rice will be honoring *six* seniors on Saturday. Austin, Bellamy, Crosthwait, Jackson, Swayze, and Stover. It's not necessarily a hard and fast rule, but typically players honored on senior day are not returning. Stover and Swayze were expected. But the other four less so. They're all listed as seniors on the official roster, but all could play another year because of COVID. With only Rickard and Conley coming in, my assumption was that most of the "academic seniors" were returning.
If all do depart, that completely changes the math for next year. We'd have 9 scholarship players returning (assuming zero transfers, which is exceedingly rare) with only two 2023 recruits. That would leave four open roster spots very late in the 2023 recruiting cycle. Would think the staff would be forced to turn to the transfer portal.

Yeah, that's a bit old school. Nowadays, senior day doesn't always mean what it used to.
Anyway, I've heard Jackson is probably back. Crossthwait might be as well. Not sure about the other two seniors, but I'd expect Austin to take a covid year somewhere else (my speculation). I kind of hope they try to bring Bellamy back another year based on how she has been playing her senior year.
If Jackson and/or Crossthwait are back, I'd expect us to be looking at small forward and traditional forwards with any scholarships we have available.
Stover and Swayze are done as we already knew. But actually Swayze might be back as a graduate assistant coach next season (non playing - she's already played 5 years now at Rice but again that doesn't always mean what it used to).

Interesting. I was doing some research earlier in the year on the men's side and somebody being honored on senior night seemed to correlate strongly with them not being on the roster the next season. But I guess you're right, COVID and the transfer portal and everything else have changed things.
