As of right now, Southern Miss will either be in the NIT or the NCAA. I think if Southern Miss wins the SBC tourney, then you gotta have locks for Marshall and Louisiana, right? Not sure if the #'s are there...but it'd be really awesome if the SBC was able to send 3 teams to the NIT this year. That'd be HUGE for a conference not necessarily knownf or it's basketball and something to build on going into '23/24.

Here is something close
http://bracketmatrix.com/nit.html

WVU was the highest team to be left out of NCAA/NIT last year at 73.
They had a losing record heading into Selection Sunday
Fresno St was next at 77 followed by
Clemson at 81
Furman at 82
Syracuse at 83 who also had a losing record
Drake at 85

RE: NIT Bids
Good stuff, it would be nice if they marked the NIT autobids with an asterisk or something though.

If it comes down to it, I really hope JMU is willing to play in one of the other tournaments this year. Obviously I hope it doesn't come to that, but if it does I think it could be a great way to keep building momentum and interest as we finally hope to turn things around for good in MBB. Plus as a team with such a deep rotation(plus a couple solid freshmen who haven't gotten much action) it could be a great combination of rewarding some major players we're losing and gaining more experience for a lot of returning players.

Based on seeding and NET rankings, I think its fair to say that 7 or 8 auto bids (Iona is debatable) knocked out teams like Clemson, Drake, Furman, and Fresno. Not sure if they would put a sub .500 team in. Towson is an example of an auto bid that would have likely make it regardless based on NET ranking

Yeah not too much trouble to look at the two side by side, noting auto bids on the first link just seems like a simple and solid improvement they could make.

Anyway, lowest NET of an at large was the Bonnies at 85 and there were 11 auto-bids. 2019(no NIT in 2020 and smaller field in 2021) had 10 auto-bids, 2018 had 12, 2017 had 10, 2016 had 15, 2015 had 12... So it seems 11 is fairly average, with similar luck in the amount of at large bids available I would think Marshall(77) has a very good chance if they make the final and lose while JMU(91) and Louisiana(93) would have some hope.

We obviously aren't getting multiple NCAA bids this year, so let's have a JMU over Marshall championship game and that should be likely to give us a decent NCAA seed and two NIT bids COGS

FYI; Guess who is chairman of the NIT Selection Committee, the wvu athletic director Wren Baker. He got the gig while he was the AD at North Texas. I wonder what he will do if Marshall is a possible invite?

RE: NIT Bids
This is sad. We’re hoping to become a two-bid conference and we’re questioning whether we’ll get an NIT bid.

Somebody need to tell the folks in charge of nonconference scheduling that we want to be a two bid conference. Until basketball starts scheduling like Louisiana or Texas State softball, not only will we remain a one bid league, that one will remain cannon fodder for Kansas, Duke, Kentucky et als in the first round of the NCAA's.

He'll follow the same ol' WVU logic and snub us.
