Garza’s throw got the runner at 2B despite the interference per the 2B ump. Owls’ accepted that out, but runner at 3B was sent back due to interference at the plate.

I have no idea if this is correct, but it explains what I saw.

Do your research magic - I swear the umps got it wrong and they should have called the batter out and returned the runner back to 1st base.

From the Umpire Bible: https://www.umpirebible.com/index.php/ru...terference

Quote: When a base runner is stealing and the catcher comes up quickly with a throw to attempt to retire the runner, the batter cannot in any way impede the catcher's effort – either intentionally or unintentionally. If he does, then the batter is out, the ball is dead, and all runners must return to their time-of-pitch base.

...

Note: If you see batter's interference, but the catcher gets the throw off anyway and succeeds in retiring the runner, then ignore the interference. By Rule 6.03(a)(3), if the catcher retires the runner, then, in effect, the interference never happened. On such a play, then, if other runners were also stealing when the interference is waved off, they get to remain at the base they stole.

So it looks like the interference should not have been enforced if, as Tomball said, the throw still got the runner out at 2nd. And then the runner from 3rd should have scored ... (or was that runner NOT trying to get home?) ... and the batter continued his at-bat.

But if the runner was NOT out at second .... then, as FBO has said, the batter should have been called out and both runners (at 1st and 3rd) returned to their "time-of-pitch" bases

Does this sound correct to y'all?

Somebody did something to somebody.

Owls win!

Seriously, I don’t know whether the runner at 3B was “also stealing” when the interference was called. If not, then maybe he was not allowed to score after the interference was signaled.

Go back and check the video on the call at 2B. Sure looked to me like the base ump signaled out on the throw and tag.

Yes, there is no question that was the call on the field.

What if the call was runner’s interference, not batter’s interference?

What runner's interference? He didn't interfere; the batter did.

That’s the assumption being made in this thread. That’s not how the play was scored.

I can't see the video. I certainly don't recall there being a play at 2nd - I thought the throw kind of deflected off the batter and bounced a few times to the pitching mound. But maybe I remembered it incorrectly.

It was definitely scored as a caught stealing. That part I recall. I just don't recall there actually being a play at 2nd base.

There was a play at 2nd and he was caught stealing. At that point he was out and if he then interfered with a throw to home, the runner at third should have been out.

??? What game were you watching? :--) Seriously, the throw made it to 2B on one bounce and beat the runner, who was tagged out. There is absolutely no question that Manny threw the runner out at 2B. There is also no question that the batter interfered with Manny's throw, and the home plate ump made that call immediately. The only thing unclear is why the runner on 3B was sent back to 3B. According the rule book (link provided by Mike), on a batters interference call, either the batter is declared out and the runners return to their original bases, OR the runner on 2B is out on the throw, in which case the batter remains up and the runner at 3B can advance to score.

Not being a CUSAtv subscriber, I also can't see the game video.

I'd love it if a clip of this play could be produced and distributed, so we can ALL see and agree on what actually happened (irrespective of the umps' calls on the play).

Mike, I was at the game, seating in the 2nd row behind home plate. There is absolutely no question about the two calls. The batter was called for interference (and it was blatant) and Manny threw the runner out at 2B (partly because the runner was holding up somewhat to ensure the runner on 3B scored).

Just watched the play again on CUSATV On Demand. It was as Walt described - throw went through on one long bounce after the interference, the tag was applied and base ump signaled out. That’s when the confusion started. Players and base runners were looking around not knowing what to do. Still not sure why the runner from 3rd was sent back unless he didn’t make his move home until after the play was called dead.
