RE: Uc at ucf gamethread
Time for me to offer some rare optimism regarding the rest of the season.

1. If vik can come back 100% his injury may end up helping this team in the aac tournament. His loss has killed our interior defense/ rebounding but ody and Kalu have gotten very comfortable in the pick and roll and finishing around the basket. That's a dimension we really were missing. It makes us so much more dynamic on offense.

2. There's still a good chance the game at Memphis is for the 3 seed in the conference tournament. Memphis is 3 games up but had has to play houston twice. Uc has two home games they should win. Today's win was really big

Ezikpe and Oguama 11 for 13, 27 pts. 10 rebounds. This Vik absence may make us stronger down the stretch when he's back.

Magic number for a bye (5th or better) is now 2.

I imagine they will get one of them. They always play Houston well. What happens if we tie, who gets the 3 seed?

I'm not 100% but I think it would be us because we beat Tulane once and they were swept by Tulane.

Today's game was only the second time in DDJ's Bearcat career where he didn't attempt a 3-point shot.

The only other game was against SMU in the conference tournament in March 2021.

DDJ played 8 minutes off the bench in his first game back from his late season mental health break aka Escape from Lord Brannen.

At 53-45 Dawkins called a TO. I thought to myself, well, this is where they have been losing it.

And thank you DDJ for not shooting a fade away three at the buzzer.

Today's game was won in one area. Rebounding.

RE: Uc at ucf gamethread
Wes should get some credit for the final possession. He let us bring it up and see if we got a good set against their defense. When he saw that Nolley was going to iso (not good for us) he called TO and made sure the ball got into DDJ's hands. DDJ of course did the rest.

In the post-game wes said he likes to let it play out so the defense can't set, but that ucf did a great job denying ddj the ball. He said they were trying to get it to him. He called timeout then.

Dave said he didn't want the ball screen. Ody set a really good screen to get him the ball then they flashed ody as screener as a decoy and dave did his thing.

Didn't get to see the game, but I did see the game winner highlight. That was the EXACT type of play/decision that should have been made at the end of the Tulane game where they only needed 1 point to win.

It was nice seeing a win in a close game. I'm not entirely sure it should have been that close down the stretch but great not watching another choke job.

Can I ask what relevance this statistic even has at this point in the season? We're NOT anywhere near the bubble discussion; the only way we get into the NCAAT is to win the Conference Tournament. Not to mention the fact that the "Q" has been known to change as teams win or lose down the stretch, so it may be a "Q1" win now, but will it be tomorrow?

Winning is obviously preferable to losing. To me, winning ON THE ROAD is the bigger accomplishment here. But Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4 doesn't practically matter at this point. Given the fact that we just got beaten on the road by ECU, I'm just glad we won on the road by UCF.

But this win doesn't really have much impact beyond seeding at the Conference tournament on the season.

just an observation

got to listen to the end of the game riding back from louisville. it was about seven minutes left as we got onto the gene snyder and davenport did something stupid. i mentioned something to the kids about how they suck and put on some tunes. tuned back in and davenport did something stupid, let em tie. terry's all, they aren't even playing a hard press. fundamentals seem to escape jd. i guess coaches can't fix that but i kind of felt we were still gonna win this one so i wasn't surprised at all by jules' runner

Getting quality wins and avoiding bad losses is a major measuring stick for program progress/success.

A 2-point win at UCF (Q1) is more relevant than a 16-point win at USF (Q3) because the Q1 game is more reflective of what we're going to face night in and night out in the Big 12.

The fact remains that Wes has struggled to beat good teams at home and decent teams on the road.

That's not to say that he's off track from where he's supposed to be 1.75 seasons into the job, but if the program is going to continue its upward trajectory, it needs to be considered as we mold and manage the roster for a new era of UC hoops.
