Plus he's playing in a much weaker conference than Maravich was.

When his Dad got the job at Detroit, we let him join his father. Mike Davis and Kelvin Sampson are friends of course.

They also have longer seasons. LSU played 26,26, and 28 regular season games with no conference tournament. Detroit has 31 this year plus a conference tournament.

Antoine Davis with 27 tonight, pulls to less than 100 of Pistol Pete (97). He'll need to average 49 to break the record or, if he plays at least three games (including 2 in the conference tournament), 32.3.

I've always thought that Sampson was a great coach. I wish we'd hired him before you guys got him.

Looks like will be in 8/9 game 1st round of Horizon tourney and then playing in QF against quite possibly 1 seed(11 team tournament, they reseed after each round).

Yes they do.

I’d laugh if Detroit scheduled Chicago State after the Horizon League tournament so he could get the record. That would be classic!

It's difficult to compare players from two vastly different eras. As I've noted in previous posts, context is needed here.

If, for example, the Antoine Davis of 2023 could be "transported" back to the late 1960s and — with his 21st century training, coaching and talent — could play against the athletes of that day ... he would absolutely wreak havoc. That era simply didn't have the sheer number of runners and jumpers that make today's game so exciting. Davis would dominate. As would many other current college players.

Conversely, and hypothetically, take the 1968 version of Pistol Pete and give him the diet, the fitness room, the coaching, etc., of today's players and let him rock and roll ... he would still be dominant (just like, for example, Oscar Robertson would be).

I started watching college (and pro) basketball in approximately 1968-70. The elite players of that day would be equally tremendous today. But many of the secondary and tertiary players of that period ... they would not make a roster in 2023.

Again, difficult to compare Davis and Maravich.

Watching Maravich lose to my Auburn Tigers one afternoon decades ago was one of my all-times hoops' highlights. Yes, he alone was worth the price of admission which wasn't much back then. Watching John Mengelt was another! And that they played against each other that day was the ultimate. Then there was a drought until Charles Barkley and Chuck Person lit it up. Entirely different game in the 80's from the late 60's and early 70's. And now the 80's games are entirely different animals compared to what we have now.

Ironically, Mike Davis had a career at 3 schools chock-full of NCAAs and NITs until…he started coaching his son at Detroit.

If that's the case, Davis' accomplishment — though extremely impressive and worthy of praise — pales in comparison to what Pistol Pete achieved.

I'm fine with Davis breaking the record. But I do feel it's important for folks to understand the context. And most won't (I would not have, to be fair, had Quo not posted the numbers comparing the two).

Interesting that the only players listed in the top 11 that I have heard of, at least before Davis got close, were Pete Maravich, Doug McDermott and Hersey Hawkins.

I don’t think any “context” is needed. The record in question is points scored in a players career. It’s not who played them most games, who played the most years, or who scored the most points per game. Those are different categories.
